What’s changed for the 2015 Toyota Auris?

We took the wraps off of the extensively revised Toyota Auris at the Geneva Motor Show last week. On sale in the UK later this year, the model benefits from a new engine line-up, a fresh look and a much improved interior.

In this simple, matter-of-fact post, we compare visual differences between outgoing and new.

Up front

The front grille incorporates a floating badge and there are new, more rounded headlights. The bumper has been reshaped and the lower air intake is now longer and wider.

Also good to know

In addition to the visual tweaks that have been applied to the 2015 Auris, the engine line-up has been revised.

A new 114bhp 1.2-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine replaces the outgoing 99bhp 1.33-litre naturally aspirated unit and a BMW-sourced 112bhp 1.6-litre diesel powertrain – first seen in the Verso MPV – appears alongside the existing 90bhp 1.4-litre D-4D engine, which has been overhauled to meet Euro 6 emissions regulations.

Finally, the hybrid powertrain has been tweaked to deliver lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy.

Prices and specifications for the new Auris will be announced in due course.

  1. I’ve ordered a new auris hybrid excel which I should pick up first week of September, and I’d like to know why safety sense is not standard kit on top of range? Only asking as I have previous model and had to pay extra for sat nav, which eventually became standard later on.

  2. Good morning David. Safety Sense is an optional extra because in order to remain competitive in the hatchback market we decided to leave it to the buyer to specify their car with the technology or without. It may be that you can contact your dealer and talk through the options on your own Auris Excel. The cost of this sort of technology does become less for manufacturers as the technology develops. This is why the first Sat Navs were optional extras on any car to begin with before rolling out as standard across many brands. Hope this helps.

    1. Hi Julian,
Thank you for your post. Auris Design and Excel both offer the option of a sky view panoramic roof, however the option of a sunroof is not available. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions please let us know. More information on Toyota Skyview can be found here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/new-cars/auris/index.json. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions please let us know.

  3. Why cant you get the Hybrid Auris Excel model with 16″ wheels. I would think that fuel economy is important to those looking to buy a hybrid vehicle and the stats in your Auris leaflet show a 10% drop in fuel economy for the 17″ wheel versus the 16″ wheel. It seems crazy not to have this option.

I am assuming it is cheaper to build a 16″ wheel car as the Icon is the lower spec and has 16″ wheels, yet you cant even downgrade an excel to the 16″ if you pay the same price as the 17″.

You cant even upscale an icon to excel spec as many of the options are for Design or Excel only, eg panoramic roof, and yes the Design only comes with the 17″ wheels.

    1. Hi Robert,
Thank you for getting in touch today. Unfortunately 16″ wheels cannot be fitted due to technical reasons – the steering rack does not allow for 16″ wheels to be fitted safely. Demand for our Auris Hybrid Excel has been significant, with nearly 35% of Auris customers choosing this grade. We would recommend speaking to your local Toyota dealer who can advise you on alternative models or grades that are suited to your needs. You can find your nearest one here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/world-of-toyota/find-your-dealer.json . We welcome your feedback and have passed this to our product team for consideration in any future product developments. Please let us know if you have any further queries.

      1. Hi, concerning your comment that 16 inch tyres are not available on the Auris Hybrid. I have a 65 plated Touring Sport Excel Hybrid that was delivered with 16 Inch tyres. Are you saying that the dealer provided something that should not be available and is possibly illegal.

  4. Hi Kevin,
Thank you for both of your posts. We have spoken again with our product team and they have advised the Hybrid Auris Touring Sports does not come with a 16″ wheel. In view of your comments we would reccommend that you stop by you local Toyota Dealer who can look at this further for you and take any neccessary action. Any other questions please let us know.

  5. Is there a pic of the instrument/dials and steering wheel for the auris excel 2015 hybrid as the book I received is unsatisfactory

    1. Hi James,
Thank you for your post. We are unable to attach pictures to our replies therefore we will send this out to the email you have provided us with. Hope this helps.

  6. The traffic receiver doesn’t work on my 16 reg auris sat nav. Software version 4.5.0wl. How can I fix this?

  7. Hi Luke,
Thank you for your post. We would recommend visiting your local Toyota Dealer who will be able to take a look at your sat nav settings and assist with this issue. Hope this helps a little further. Many thanks.

  8. Hi,
I have 16 plate new Auris Excel 1.8 Hybrid. One of the reverse (back-up) light bulbs need to be replaced. Yes I can go to Toyota dealer or some other place like Halfords but this is something one should be able to do himself. I downloaded the instruction manual (OM12J21E) and try to follow instructions on page 501 of 640. But I don’t think the bulb base can be turned (clockwise/counter-clockwise). Even the picture in the manual not 100% similar. Can you help.

    1. Hi there,
Thanks for your post. After speaking with our technical team, they have advised that once you have removed the plastic covering, the bulb should simply twist out and then you must remove the connector. If you are still having trouble a dealer will give the best advice on how to do this! Many thanks.

  9. Hi, I have a “Business” trim and have recently seen an “Icon” trim for sale which looks exactly the same as mine inside and out, what are the difference between the two levels as the Icon trim is a little cheaper?

    1. Hi Ben,
Thanks for getting in touch. The internal trims are the same but there are differences in spec, the Business Edition adds on top of an Icon (As standard):
      – Toyota Touch 2 with Go Navigation
      – Cruise Control
      – Heated Seats
      – Power Lumbar Support
      Many thanks.
