Toyota warranty – how it works

Every new Toyota in the UK is eligible to be covered up to ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) of Toyota warranty. This is provided through an initial three-year manufacturer warranty followed by up to seven years of service-activated warranty. Terms and conditions apply and can be read here

For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Toyota warranty

The combination of manufacturer warranty and service-activated warranty means Toyota owners can access Toyota warranty of up to 10 years (or 100,000 miles), giving them a chance to relax in the knowledge that they and their vehicle are in safe hands.

The warranty applies to every type of powertrain, from market-leading hybrids and conventional petrol and diesel models to advanced new battery electric vehicles.

Here we answer key questions about the Toyota warranty programme. If you require further information, please let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer your queries.

How do I get the Toyota warranty?

From 1 June 2021, all new Toyota vehicles have been sold with a three-year (or 60,000-mile) manufacturer warranty as standard. Following that initial period, Toyota provides a 12-month (or 10,000-mile) warranty with every qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, for up to an additional seven years.

There are no complex formalities. The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota centre. By keeping to their vehicle’s service schedule, customers can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

How does the Toyota warranty work?

The warranty operates in the same way as the warranties provided on new and approved used Toyota vehicles. Cover is automatic when the vehicle undergoes a scheduled full or interim qualifying service and effective from that date for 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is soonest. On vehicles that have service intervals every two years, the cover is for 24 months or 20,000 miles.

There are no forms to sign to obtain the warranty cover and the customer does not have to keep or present any policy documents should they need to make a claim. The warranty status of their vehicle is recorded in the details of their vehicle held by the Toyota network and is noted on the service invoice raised by the centre.

Approved vehicle parts

This central record means that a vehicle’s warranty will be recognised at any official Toyota centre, should customers move or choose to have their car serviced at a different approved location.

Following completion of a service where their vehicle qualifies for the warranty, customers will be sent a confirmation email by their centre (subject to them providing an email address for contact).

If a vehicle requires work to be done under warranty, the customer contacts their local Toyota centre in the first instance. They will be able to confirm the warranty status on receiving details of the vehicle.

Which cars are eligible for the new Toyota warranty?

It’s a comprehensive programme that applies to all Toyota passenger cars, Toyota Professional light commercial vans and pick-ups and the latest Toyota GR performance models.

Likewise, there are no exclusions where powertrains are concerned, with the same level of cover provided for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles and the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell saloon, as well as for models with petrol and diesel internal combustion engines.

Eligible vehicles range from cars just completing the period of their new vehicle warranty, to high-mileage models that have passed through multiple ownerships and have no prior Toyota service history.

What’s covered and what’s not covered?

This new Toyota warranty covers the same parts and labour as the three-year manufacturer’s warranty provided on new Toyota vehicles and the one-year manufacturer warranty that’s standard with approved used vehicles.

It does not include wear and tear items, bodywork, paint, interior trims and maintenance parts. A vehicle health check is part of the service package, which includes all mechanical and electronic parts, which helps potential problems to be detected at an early stage. Any existing defects present at the time of service are excluded from the warranty.

Full terms and conditions can be downloaded from toyota.co.uk

Although the warranty cover is uniform, different types of vehicle owner will have a different customer experience:

New Toyota vehicles

Customers with new Toyota vehicles will have a three-year/60,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty in place, or, for Toyotas ordered prior to 1 June 2021, a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

For vehicles with a two-year service schedule, a 24-month/20,000-mile warranty will automatically be activated. The warranty will then be renewed at each successive qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, until the ten years or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

Approved used Toyota vehicles

Customers with approved used vehicles purchased from the Toyota network will have a 12-month warranty with unlimited mileage, plus one year’s AA roadside assistance cover providing breakdown and recovery services at the customer’s home or roadside.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Used Toyota vehicles

Customers with used vehicles purchased outside the Toyota network can still enjoy the same benefit. Cars registered prior to 1 June 2021 came with a five-year manufacturer warranty. Cars registered after 1 June 2021 carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit.

‘Lapsed’ and new customers

Lapsed and new customers who have previously chosen to have their vehicle serviced outside the Toyota network can also take advantage of the warranty. There is no requirement for a vehicle to have a history of servicing at an official centre in order to qualify for the warranty; it will be applied from the date the vehicle undergoes a qualifying service at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota customers with service plans

Customers who have a service plan for their vehicle face no additional costs or changes to the terms of their plan. The warranty will be an additional, added-value benefit when they next undergo a qualifying service .

Toyota warranty and hybrid vehicles

For customers with hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Health Check forms part of the scheduled servicing. The warranty includes cover for the hybrid battery and components for up to 10 years/100,000 miles. After this time, customers can still extend the cover for up to 15 years with a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check.

I have purchased a vehicle with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When does it become eligible for the Toyota warranty?

Vehicles purchased on or after 1 June 2021 are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for three years. The additional warranty benefit can be enjoyed following a qualifying service when the warranty expires, by having the car serviced at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota servicing

I have a three-year-old Toyota with an active five-year warranty. Will the Toyota warranty affect this cover?

Vehicles purchased on or after 1 June 2021 are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for three years. The additional warranty benefit can be enjoyed following a qualifying service when the warranty expires, by having the car serviced at an approved Toyota centre.

I recently purchased a used car from a Toyota centre. When will it be eligible for the Toyota warranty?

Used cars purchased through the centre network are covered by a 12 months/unlimited mileage warranty. Toyota warranty benefits can be enjoyed when the car is brought in for its next scheduled service.

I already have an extended warranty. Can I swap onto this warranty you’re describing here?

Yes, you can cancel a Toyota extended warranty policy and receive a pro-rata refund, provided you haven’t made a claim. Once that is cancelled, you’ll then need to have a qualifying service to activate the new warranty. It may be better to wait until your next service is due! If you purchased an extended warranty through a Toyota centre, the terms and conditions for cancellation may be different.

Can I purchase the Toyota warranty?

No, the warranty is automatically activated following the completion of a full or interim service.

Does the warranty apply to light commercial vehicles and business vehicles?

Yes, it applies to all Toyota vehicles.

Is a Hybrid Health Check still available to extend my Toyota vehicle’s hybrid battery cover?

The Hybrid Health Check is included as part of the service on vehicles less than 10 years old or having less than 100,000 miles on the clock. When a Toyota warranty contract is activated, it will include the hybrid battery cover. When the vehicle is no longer eligible for the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, extended warranty cover on the hybrid battery and components can be accessed through a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check, up to the vehicle reaching 15 years from the date of first registration.

My vehicle’s service schedule is every two years? How does this affect the warranty?

Where scheduled maintenance is every two years, a warranty contract will automatically be activated and cover the vehicle for two years/20,000 miles until the next qualifying service is due.

Will I receive confirmation that my vehicle is covered by the Toyota warranty?

Centres will advise customers if their vehicle is eligible for the Toyota warranty. When a qualifying service has been completed and the warranty contract has been active, customers will receive a follow-up email. Further questions arising can be answered by the centre which looks after your vehicle.

Does the introduction of the Toyota warranty affect the service plan I’ve purchased for my vehicle?

Customers with a service plan now get more for their money when their vehicle is eligible for a warranty, receiving an extra year’s warranty for their vehicle when it undergoes a qualifying service, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

If my vehicle is nine years and 364 days old on the day of service, will a Toyota warranty contract be activated and will it expire the next day?

A full contract will be activated every time an eligible vehicle undergoes a qualifying service. In this example the vehicle will be covered until one day before the 11th anniversary of its first date of registration.

Can I transfer the Toyota warranty to a new owner if I sell my vehicle?

If a vehicle is sold, the new owner inherits the benefits and can continue to extend the warranty by maintaining it at a Toyota centre. The warranty cover applies only to the serviced vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

Will the Toyota warranty cover expire if I am late booking my vehicle’s next service?

The vehicle must be serviced before the warranty expires to activate a new contract and maintain the cover. Local centres can provide further advice and help book your next qualifying service.

I own a GR Yaris with a GR Yaris Track Warranty. If I drive my car on track, will this affect my Toyota warranty cover?

Driving the GR Yaris on track would not invalidate the warranty, but terms and conditions still apply. The vehicle can be covered by both the track and Toyota warranties.

The warranty cover on my approved used Toyota includes one year’s AA roadside assistance cover. Is this available with the Toyota warranty?

Roadside cover is not included in the Toyota or Lexus warranty but can be purchased separately if required. The warranty is exceptional value, being provided at no extra cost to the customer beyond the menu pricing of their vehicle’s service.

Are there other benefits to using Toyota centres?

In addition to the warranty, servicing at a Toyota centre provides other significant benefits to customers. Work is carried out by qualified Toyota technicians, using Toyota-approved parts to ensure optimum performance.

Workshop teams are fully equipped and trained work on all the technologies featured in Toyota vehicles, including electrified powertrains and advanced handling and safety systems. Pricing is transparent with a service menu price guarantee for the scheduled servicing requirements for each model.

Toyota customer-focused approach includes an online service booking facility at the customer’s preferred centre. Centres will also make servicing as convenient as possible, with collection and delivery, courtesy cars and while-you-wait servicing options.

  1. Hello
Recently purchased RAV4 2013 with the Toyota Mandatory 5-10 years warranty coverage, with the car hitting the 10 year age around 7 months after purchase. I assume this will expire 12 months after purchase, therefore the car will be 10 years and 5 months.
Also active is, Associated Contracts with cover level of Assist (assume AA cover) and cover level of MOT.

I ask if my assumption are correct and can you please explain the MOT cover level ref number

    1. Hi Tim, thanks for your questions.

Please provide your Vehicle Registration so that we can look into this for you.

      Thanks.

      1. Thanks

So what is the paling of this method of contact.

Looking at at her posts, most end with the same comments of contact your Toyota Centre

      2. Hi Tim,

Your Toyota Centre have the details of your vehicle, which is why we advise contacting them for this question.

        Thanks.

  2. Hey Toyota,

On both my corollas the black outside door /window trim losing colour and turning silver, this happened on my last 20 reg and is now occuring on my other 2 21/21 reg corollas. This has also been a topic of discussion on the Toyota owners club forums, where some people have had them replaced under warranty.

I have just been down to my local RRG dealer and they have tried to fob me off, saing its only a cosmetic problem so they wont deal with it. They treid telling me I would have to book my car in and it would take to much time, as toyota would probably refuse the warranty claim any way. Cosmetic or not these cars are two years old and the door window trims on the out side are turning grey/silver. I cannot get my local dealer to take this seriously, but it is a genuine issue!

I even showed my dealer multiple cars on their own premisis where the front or back door windows trims are like black and white in diffrence on the ones they are reselling. What are toyota going to do about it if my own dealer is not willing to help.

  3. I bought my Toyota Yaris hybrid in 2015 from a local Toyota dealer. The car is now about 8 years old and covered by extended warranty year on year. I am a low car user and only cover 3000 to 4000 miles per annum. Can I have service every 2 years and still be covered by the warranty? I have asked this previously but was informed that I have to service every year with them only to have the extended warranty.

    1. Hi Surinder,
      Thanks for your comment.
Unfortunately, you will have to have your Yaris serviced every 12 months.
Extended Warranty Cover is automatic when the vehicle undergoes a scheduled full or interim qualifying service and effective from that date for 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is soonest.
As your Yaris has a 12 month service schedule, you will have to adhere to this to be covered by the warranty.
      We hope this helps.
      Thanks.

  4. I had my Toyota CHR registration number LR17PYS serviced at a Toyota dealer in September and I thought this would have entitled me to a further one year warranty as per what I have read on the Toyota website but the dealer says this does not apply to my car, can you confirm either way please.

    1. Hi Peter, thanks for your question.

The Additional Warranty is activated automatically on completion of a scheduled full or interim vehicle service at an Authorised Toyota Centre. By keeping to the vehicle’s recommendeded service schedule, customers can gain an additional 12 months/10,000 miles (whichever comes first) warranty from each service, year after year, until the 10-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) limit is reached.

Have you reached 100,000 miles on your Toyota C-HR?

      Thanks.

      1. My car was registered on 27/03/2017 and has not covered 100000 miles, it was serviced in September and the dealership says it is not covered by Toyota warranty as it is over 5 years old, that is not what the warranty states, who is right.

  5. The dealership is Beadles Toyota Maidstone, it is my daughter that has been dealing with them and I resorted to making these enquires through you because they told her it was not covered, gives Toyota a bad name.

    1. Hi Peter,

We have just spoken to Toyota Maidstone and they have confirmed that if your vehicle is not over 100,000 miles or an insurance write-off, it will be eligible for an additional 12 months warranty.

      Thanks.

  6. I have 71 plate Yaris Cross Excel which is still under manufacturer warranty. If I go to an independant garage for servicing, would that void the warranty?

    1. Hi Foon,
      Thanks for your comment.
During the manufacturers warranty, you may have you vehicle serviced wherever you like.
      We hope this helps.
      Thanks.

  7. It’s not clear from the way your standard text reads how the 3 year warranty period for a new car is sequenced withe the 12 month service.

    – Do I need to have the first of the annual service on the three year anniversary or the four year anniversary of purchase?

It’s not clear how the up to ten tear warranty with annual services works with breakdown cover.

    – If I breakdown on a journey, the car is covered by warranty, and the car needs to be fixed then do Toyota fix it for free at roadside?
    – If a breakdown recovery services fixes it does that void my warranty?
    – Do I need to get to a Toyota garage for the Toyota repair under warranty and in that case I just need breakdown cover that gets the broken down car to a garage?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Alison, thanks for your questions.

The Manufacturer Warranty” means the 3-year/60,000 mile (whichever comes first) warranty that all new Toyota vehicles sold on or after 1 June 2021 receive as standard.

In regards to your questions about Roadside Assistance, we will send a mechanic to the scene of the breakdown as soon as possible at no cost to you or an Authorised Driver in order to determine and, if possible, repair the fault so as to enable your vehicle to be safely driven again. You or the Authorised Driver will not have to pay for Our Service Contractor’s mechanic’s labour costs but will have to pay for any replacement parts or consumable items that he has to fit or add to your vehicle in order to make it drivable again. We will reimburse you the cost of replacing any parts (including labour charges) that are covered by our Warranty.

Warranty is voided if there are damage or defects to your vehicle as a result of repairs not performed by an Authorised Toyota Repairer.

      Hope this helps.

      Thanks.

      1. Hi thanks. So what’s the answer to my specific question: – Do I need to have the first of the annual service on the three year anniversary or the four year anniversary of purchase?
Do I need to book my first service so that it is completed by the time the three year initial warranty runs out?

      2. Hi Alison,

The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota centre. By keeping to your vehicle’s service schedule, customers can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

Please contact your Toyota Centre regarding your service scheudle, as this is individual to each centre.

        Thanks.

      3. So is it possible for me to take out roadside assistance with another company as long as an Authorised dealer fixes any issue? Or what circumstances can I choose another non-Toyota supplier?

Or is the implication that I have to take out Toyota Roadside Assistance – ie Toyota has a monopoly?

      4. Hi Alison, thanks for your question.

You are only eligible for Toyota Roadside Assistance if you take out Toyota Roadside Assistance. This is supported by the AA.

        Thanks.

  8. Hi

My first 3 services were done by a non Toyota Garage, not my 3 year warranty is coming to an end – if I were to have it serviced by a Toyota serviced garage would it activate the extended warranty?

    1. Hi Jazz,
      Thanks for your comment.
The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota Centre.
By keeping to your vehicle’s service schedule, you can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.
      Thanks.

  9. Hi
I am going to instal a hardwired dash cam on my brand new rav 4 self charging hybrid. Will the battery still be covered under 10 years warranty ?

    1. Hi Victoria, thanks for your question.

Damage or defects as a result of consequential damage caused by non-Toyota-genuine accessories or special equipment will invalidate the warranty.

      Thanks.

  10. Toyota also used to provide complimentary roadside assist when their cars were serviced through a Toyota dealership. Is this still the case?

Also how long has the warranty scheme been in place? The reason that I ask is that I have a Hilux that developed a fault with the turbo in March 2019. The vehicle was under 10 years old (Registered 2012), had less than 100,000 miles and was serviced in accordance with the service schedule at a Toyota main dealer. I was charged £758.02 for the turbo repair by the dealer.
Should the turbo fault have been covered under warranty?

    1. Hi David, thanks for your question.

You can find out more about Toyota Roadside Assistance and pricing here: https://www.roadsidecover.com/toyota.

We cannot advise on this, as warranty eligibility is determined on a case by case basis. Warranty claims need to be investigated by a Toyota Centre.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact our Customer Relations Team. You can find them here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/help-centre#/iframe/https%3A%2F%2Fforms.toyota.co.uk%2Fcontact-us.

      Thanks.
