Toyota warranty – how it works

Every new Toyota in the UK is eligible to be covered up to ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) of Toyota warranty. This is provided through an initial three-year manufacturer warranty followed by up to seven years of service-activated warranty. Terms and conditions apply and can be read here

For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Toyota warranty

The combination of manufacturer warranty and service-activated warranty means Toyota owners can access Toyota warranty of up to 10 years (or 100,000 miles), giving them a chance to relax in the knowledge that they and their vehicle are in safe hands.

The warranty applies to every type of powertrain, from market-leading hybrids and conventional petrol and diesel models to advanced new battery electric vehicles.

Here we answer key questions about the Toyota warranty programme. If you require further information, please let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer your queries.

How do I get the Toyota warranty?

From 1 June 2021, all new Toyota vehicles have been sold with a three-year (or 60,000-mile) manufacturer warranty as standard. Following that initial period, Toyota provides a 12-month (or 10,000-mile) warranty with every qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, for up to an additional seven years.

There are no complex formalities. The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota centre. By keeping to their vehicle’s service schedule, customers can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

How does the Toyota warranty work?

The warranty operates in the same way as the warranties provided on new and approved used Toyota vehicles. Cover is automatic when the vehicle undergoes a scheduled full or interim qualifying service and effective from that date for 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is soonest. On vehicles that have service intervals every two years, the cover is for 24 months or 20,000 miles.

There are no forms to sign to obtain the warranty cover and the customer does not have to keep or present any policy documents should they need to make a claim. The warranty status of their vehicle is recorded in the details of their vehicle held by the Toyota network and is noted on the service invoice raised by the centre.

Approved vehicle parts

This central record means that a vehicle’s warranty will be recognised at any official Toyota centre, should customers move or choose to have their car serviced at a different approved location.

Following completion of a service where their vehicle qualifies for the warranty, customers will be sent a confirmation email by their centre (subject to them providing an email address for contact).

If a vehicle requires work to be done under warranty, the customer contacts their local Toyota centre in the first instance. They will be able to confirm the warranty status on receiving details of the vehicle.

Which cars are eligible for the new Toyota warranty?

It’s a comprehensive programme that applies to all Toyota passenger cars, Toyota Professional light commercial vans and pick-ups and the latest Toyota GR performance models.

Likewise, there are no exclusions where powertrains are concerned, with the same level of cover provided for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles and the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell saloon, as well as for models with petrol and diesel internal combustion engines.

Eligible vehicles range from cars just completing the period of their new vehicle warranty, to high-mileage models that have passed through multiple ownerships and have no prior Toyota service history.

What’s covered and what’s not covered?

This new Toyota warranty covers the same parts and labour as the three-year manufacturer’s warranty provided on new Toyota vehicles and the one-year manufacturer warranty that’s standard with approved used vehicles.

It does not include wear and tear items, bodywork, paint, interior trims and maintenance parts. A vehicle health check is part of the service package, which includes all mechanical and electronic parts, which helps potential problems to be detected at an early stage. Any existing defects present at the time of service are excluded from the warranty.

Full terms and conditions can be downloaded from toyota.co.uk

Although the warranty cover is uniform, different types of vehicle owner will have a different customer experience:

New Toyota vehicles

Customers with new Toyota vehicles will have a three-year/60,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty in place, or, for Toyotas ordered prior to 1 June 2021, a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

For vehicles with a two-year service schedule, a 24-month/20,000-mile warranty will automatically be activated. The warranty will then be renewed at each successive qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, until the ten years or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

Approved used Toyota vehicles

Customers with approved used vehicles purchased from the Toyota network will have a 12-month warranty with unlimited mileage, plus one year’s AA roadside assistance cover providing breakdown and recovery services at the customer’s home or roadside.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Used Toyota vehicles

Customers with used vehicles purchased outside the Toyota network can still enjoy the same benefit. Cars registered prior to 1 June 2021 came with a five-year manufacturer warranty. Cars registered after 1 June 2021 carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit.

‘Lapsed’ and new customers

Lapsed and new customers who have previously chosen to have their vehicle serviced outside the Toyota network can also take advantage of the warranty. There is no requirement for a vehicle to have a history of servicing at an official centre in order to qualify for the warranty; it will be applied from the date the vehicle undergoes a qualifying service at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota customers with service plans

Customers who have a service plan for their vehicle face no additional costs or changes to the terms of their plan. The warranty will be an additional, added-value benefit when they next undergo a qualifying service .

Toyota warranty and hybrid vehicles

For customers with hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Health Check forms part of the scheduled servicing. The warranty includes cover for the hybrid battery and components for up to 10 years/100,000 miles. After this time, customers can still extend the cover for up to 15 years with a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check.

Yes, you can cancel a Toyota extended warranty policy and receive a pro-rata refund, provided you haven’t made a claim. Once that is cancelled, you’ll then need to have a qualifying service to activate the new warranty. It may be better to wait until your next service is due! If you purchased an extended warranty through a Toyota centre, the terms and conditions for cancellation may be different.

The Hybrid Health Check is included as part of the service on vehicles less than 10 years old or having less than 100,000 miles on the clock. When a Toyota warranty contract is activated, it will include the hybrid battery cover. When the vehicle is no longer eligible for the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, extended warranty cover on the hybrid battery and components can be accessed through a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check, up to the vehicle reaching 15 years from the date of first registration.

My vehicle’s service schedule is every two years? How does this affect the warranty?

Will I receive confirmation that my vehicle is covered by the Toyota warranty?

Centres will advise customers if their vehicle is eligible for the Toyota warranty. When a qualifying service has been completed and the warranty contract has been active, customers will receive a follow-up email. Further questions arising can be answered by the centre which looks after your vehicle.

Does the introduction of the Toyota warranty affect the service plan I’ve purchased for my vehicle?

Customers with a service plan now get more for their money when their vehicle is eligible for a warranty, receiving an extra year’s warranty for their vehicle when it undergoes a qualifying service, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

If my vehicle is nine years and 364 days old on the day of service, will a Toyota warranty contract be activated and will it expire the next day?

A full contract will be activated every time an eligible vehicle undergoes a qualifying service. In this example the vehicle will be covered until one day before the 11th anniversary of its first date of registration.

Can I transfer the Toyota warranty to a new owner if I sell my vehicle?

If a vehicle is sold, the new owner inherits the benefits and can continue to extend the warranty by maintaining it at a Toyota centre. The warranty cover applies only to the serviced vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

Will the Toyota warranty cover expire if I am late booking my vehicle’s next service?

The vehicle must be serviced before the warranty expires to activate a new contract and maintain the cover. Local centres can provide further advice and help book your next qualifying service.

I own a GR Yaris with a GR Yaris Track Warranty. If I drive my car on track, will this affect my Toyota warranty cover?

Driving the GR Yaris on track would not invalidate the warranty, but terms and conditions still apply. The vehicle can be covered by both the track and Toyota warranties.

The warranty cover on my approved used Toyota includes one year’s AA roadside assistance cover. Is this available with the Toyota warranty?

Roadside cover is not included in the Toyota or Lexus warranty but can be purchased separately if required. The warranty is exceptional value, being provided at no extra cost to the customer beyond the menu pricing of their vehicle’s service.

Are there other benefits to using Toyota centres?

In addition to the warranty, servicing at a Toyota centre provides other significant benefits to customers. Work is carried out by qualified Toyota technicians, using Toyota-approved parts to ensure optimum performance.

Workshop teams are fully equipped and trained work on all the technologies featured in Toyota vehicles, including electrified powertrains and advanced handling and safety systems. Pricing is transparent with a service menu price guarantee for the scheduled servicing requirements for each model.

Toyota customer-focused approach includes an online service booking facility at the customer’s preferred centre. Centres will also make servicing as convenient as possible, with collection and delivery, courtesy cars and while-you-wait servicing options.

  1. My Proace is now 4 years old. It still has 1 year of its original manufacturing warranty remaining. We bought it when it was 1 year old. At that time we also bought a service plan covering 3 services (i.e. years 2, 4 and 6). It was serviced at two years old and again at four (last week). I enquire about your Relax warranty. I understand that, for Proace vehicles, the Relax warranty would be extended to two years/20000miles … after its service. My question is: we have a service plan in place for year 6 … but the original manufacturer’s warranty will have expired by then … where do we stand with regards to the Relax warranty between year 5 and year 6? The van isn’t due a service at the end of year 5 when its warranty runs out. Most Proace owners must be in a similar position to myself!
I hope this makes sense. I look forward to your response.

    1. Hi Elizabeth,
      Thanks for your comment.
Please may you provide your Vehicle Registration so that we can look into this for you.
      Thanks.

      1. I have a 2016 Hilux with extra 1 years warranty every time I get it serviced, the paint on the cargo bed cover is bobbled, the cover was purchased with the vehicle from Jemca Toyota.
        Is the paint under warranty??

      2. Sorry to hear you’re experiencing a problem Stephen.

Please get in touch with your local Toyota Centre so they can inspect and advise further.

        Thank you.

      3. Sorry for the delay in responding to your email. I was about to write to Toyota … and remembered that I had posted this some time ago. I hope my query is still active!
My Proace has a private plate on it: RA66SAY

      4. Hi Elizabeth,

Our Warranty Team have advised contacting your Toyota Centre regarding this, since it is dependent on your specific service plan.

        Thanks.

      5. Thanks, but your answer seems a bit vague. What is Toyota UK’s policy for Proace warranty between year 5 and 6? By suggesting I contact my Toyota Service Centre … is there a suggestion that certain service plans may cover my van for warranty during this time? If this is the case, which specific services would allow this?
I look forward to being given a much clearer answer to this question.
It must affect ALL Proace owners those vehicles are approaching 5 years old!

      6. Hi Elizabeth,

Our Warranty Team recommended that you contact your Toyota Centre, as it is dependent on your service plan which your dealer will have access to.

        Thanks.

  2. I have a 67 plate Toyota proace Verso,

The warranty expired at the beginning of this month but I had a Toyota dealer service in December last year.
I have just had an engine fault come on the dash. I spoke to my local dealer and they told me that I am out of warranty and the service I bought last year doesn’t provide any warrantly because I was still under warranty at the time. He wants to charge me £120 just to diagnose this fault.

Is he correct about my lack of coverage?

    1. Hi Will,
      Thanks for your question.
The dealer is requesting a fee to initially diagnose the fault and determine the problem, which is normal practice.
Should the defect be a manufacturing fault, and the vehicle is covered by warranty, then warranty will take the cost.
This initial cost is to understand the problem, as at present it is a warning light indicating fault.
      Hope this helps.
      Thanks.

      1. I have a 64 plate GT86 with a service contract and warranty. One of my rear light clusters is continually full of condensation. When I booked the car in to have it inspected, the guy in the service department said there would be a £130 charge if it was found not to be covered by the warranty! How can I find out if it’s covered or not before I go in and potentially squander £130? (According to what I read on forums, this is a particularly common problem.)

        Would like some advice please.

      2. Hi Lloyd, thanks for your question.

This is an inspection charge for our mechanics to assess the issue. Our warranty covers any mechanical fault caused by a manufacturing defect, so if it found that the problem was caused by a manaufacturing defect your vehicle will be covered.

        Thanks.

  3. Could you tell me if the factory fitted rear view camera is included in the service warranty? As mine camera has started flickering sometimes works other times doesn’t come on at all, my Toyota dealer said it needs a new camera, Does it come under this part of the warranty being a factory installed Accessory? See below
    “” Body:
Sunroof (Toyota Genuine only); Sunroof Motors (Toyota Genuine only); Door Locks; Bonnet Release Cable; Tailgate Struts; Wiper Spindles; Manual Seat Frames; Seat belt mechanism; Multimedia systems; Factory Installed Accessories; and Hub installed accessories in so far these are uploaded by Toyota (GB) plc on their internal system within three months after first vehicle registration.””?

    1. Hi Vivienne,
      Thanks for your question.
Each warranty claim must first be investigated by a registered Toyota Centre to establish the root cause of the fault.
The team there will take a look to see if the issue is due to a manufacturing defect that may be covered under the Toyota Warranty.
Please contact your Toyota Centre to further assist you with this.
      Thanks.

  4. Hi, I am thinking about buying a Toyota Corolla, registration: RV20 MKG. Can you tell me if the 5 years Manufactuers Warranty is valid judging by your service records?

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Many thanks

    Tom

    1. Hi Tom,
      Thanks for your question.

If you are purchasing an Approved Used Vehicle from the Toyota network, it will have a 12-month warranty with unlimited mileage.
This includes one year’s AA roadside assistance cover providing breakdown and recovery services at the customer’s home or roadside.
After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

If you are purchasing your vehicle outside the Toyota Network, you can still enjoy the same benefit.
Cars registered prior to 1 June 2021 came with a five-year manufacturer warranty.
When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit.

      Hope this helps.
      Thanks.

  5. Hi, I am Roberto from Salford,
I have toyota Prius 05 for the past five years servicing at toyota dealership. Now I have bought another Prius 2011 with around 68000 miles imported from Japan. As a loyal customer of toyota is my car benefit from any kind of Toyota manufacturer wartanty?

    1. Hi Roberto, thanks for your question.

We really appreciate your loyalty to Toyota.

Unfortunately, we are unable to advise on imported vehicles.

      Thanks.

  6. Hi, I’m thinking of buying a Toyota Yaris 2020 model with 22000 mileage on it, which still has Toyota manufacturer’s warranty till March 2023. But the owner did servicing in a local garage which isn’t a Toyota approved. Now, I am concerned with when should I do a servicing in a Toyota approved center to activate additional Toyota warranty, or any other things necessary to activate or things that could void the additional Toyota warranty.

    1. Hi Johan, thanks for your comment.

It is fine to service outside the Toyota network. You will only need to service with a Toyota Centre to benefit from the additional warranty. If your Yaris is a 2020 model, depending on the date of manufacture it likely has a 5 year manufacturing warranty.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  7. I have just purchased a used Toyota Rav4 with the 12 months warranty plus 12 months AA cover. How and where do I find evidence of having the warranty and the AA cover?
If I was to require assistance from the AA, what do I do?, I haven’t been given a membership number or a phone number to call.
    Many Thanks
    David Greenwood

    1. Hi David,
Congratulations on your new RAV4! Thank you for choosing Toyota.
Please provide your vehicle registration so we can look into this for you.
      Thanks.

      1. Hi David,

Please contact your Toyota Centre so that they can provide you with evidence of your Warranty and Roadside Assistance.

        The Roadside Assistance numbers are 0800 246 824 or 01737 500 021.

        Many thanks.

  8. Hi, I have a Proace City Electric, which we bought in April (2022). Just under 4k miles now and absolutely loving it as a vehicle to own and drive. I was wondering if you could confirm the service schedule for these, as I have not been able to get consistent information so far and it might be useful for others to know. I was initially led to believe that it would be serviced every 2 years with an inspection/check in between. Then alternatively I was told a service every year. I can’t find anything EV specific on the website, perhaps you could clarify?

    1. Hi Simon, thanks for your question.

The Proace City EV requires a one-off inspection service at one year or 12,500 miles (whichever comes sooner) and then all other services are at 2 years or 20,000 miles starting from the second year.

      Hope this helps.

      Thanks.

  9. Hi
I recently bought Approved Used Yaris Hybrid. Should the car been serviced prior sale, because I don’t see any evidence of that and its not recorded on My Toyota website
    Regards

    1. Hi Remi, thanks for your question.

All Toyota Approved Used vehicles are inspected by our technicians and pass a comprehensive 145 point technical check. This means that you can drive away knowing that your used Toyota has been properly cared for.

Please contact your Toyota Centre regarding servicing history for your vehicle.

      Thanks.

  10. Having been sold two years of Toyota Roadside Assistance in March 2021 and had my car recently written off, I have been denied a refund for the outstanding term on the, even though I now have no car.
This condition was never mentioned at sale and, if this is how this scheme is meant to operate, I wonder if “Which”, when they gave a complimentary review of the system in 2020, were aware of this?
