Toyota warranty – how it works

Every new Toyota in the UK is eligible to be covered up to ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) of Toyota warranty. This is provided through an initial three-year manufacturer warranty followed by up to seven years of service-activated warranty. Terms and conditions apply and can be read here

For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Toyota warranty

The combination of manufacturer warranty and service-activated warranty means Toyota owners can access Toyota warranty of up to 10 years (or 100,000 miles), giving them a chance to relax in the knowledge that they and their vehicle are in safe hands.

The warranty applies to every type of powertrain, from market-leading hybrids and conventional petrol and diesel models to advanced new battery electric vehicles.

Here we answer key questions about the Toyota warranty programme. If you require further information, please let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer your queries.

How do I get the Toyota warranty?

From 1 June 2021, all new Toyota vehicles have been sold with a three-year (or 60,000-mile) manufacturer warranty as standard. Following that initial period, Toyota provides a 12-month (or 10,000-mile) warranty with every qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, for up to an additional seven years.

There are no complex formalities. The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota centre. By keeping to their vehicle’s service schedule, customers can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

How does the Toyota warranty work?

The warranty operates in the same way as the warranties provided on new and approved used Toyota vehicles. Cover is automatic when the vehicle undergoes a scheduled full or interim qualifying service and effective from that date for 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is soonest. On vehicles that have service intervals every two years, the cover is for 24 months or 20,000 miles.

There are no forms to sign to obtain the warranty cover and the customer does not have to keep or present any policy documents should they need to make a claim. The warranty status of their vehicle is recorded in the details of their vehicle held by the Toyota network and is noted on the service invoice raised by the centre.

Approved vehicle parts

This central record means that a vehicle’s warranty will be recognised at any official Toyota centre, should customers move or choose to have their car serviced at a different approved location.

Following completion of a service where their vehicle qualifies for the warranty, customers will be sent a confirmation email by their centre (subject to them providing an email address for contact).

If a vehicle requires work to be done under warranty, the customer contacts their local Toyota centre in the first instance. They will be able to confirm the warranty status on receiving details of the vehicle.

Which cars are eligible for the new Toyota warranty?

It’s a comprehensive programme that applies to all Toyota passenger cars, Toyota Professional light commercial vans and pick-ups and the latest Toyota GR performance models.

Likewise, there are no exclusions where powertrains are concerned, with the same level of cover provided for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles and the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell saloon, as well as for models with petrol and diesel internal combustion engines.

Eligible vehicles range from cars just completing the period of their new vehicle warranty, to high-mileage models that have passed through multiple ownerships and have no prior Toyota service history.

What’s covered and what’s not covered?

This new Toyota warranty covers the same parts and labour as the three-year manufacturer’s warranty provided on new Toyota vehicles and the one-year manufacturer warranty that’s standard with approved used vehicles.

It does not include wear and tear items, bodywork, paint, interior trims and maintenance parts. A vehicle health check is part of the service package, which includes all mechanical and electronic parts, which helps potential problems to be detected at an early stage. Any existing defects present at the time of service are excluded from the warranty.

Full terms and conditions can be downloaded from toyota.co.uk

Although the warranty cover is uniform, different types of vehicle owner will have a different customer experience:

New Toyota vehicles

Customers with new Toyota vehicles will have a three-year/60,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty in place, or, for Toyotas ordered prior to 1 June 2021, a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

For vehicles with a two-year service schedule, a 24-month/20,000-mile warranty will automatically be activated. The warranty will then be renewed at each successive qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, until the ten years or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

Approved used Toyota vehicles

Customers with approved used vehicles purchased from the Toyota network will have a 12-month warranty with unlimited mileage, plus one year’s AA roadside assistance cover providing breakdown and recovery services at the customer’s home or roadside.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Used Toyota vehicles

Customers with used vehicles purchased outside the Toyota network can still enjoy the same benefit. Cars registered prior to 1 June 2021 came with a five-year manufacturer warranty. Cars registered after 1 June 2021 carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit.

‘Lapsed’ and new customers

Lapsed and new customers who have previously chosen to have their vehicle serviced outside the Toyota network can also take advantage of the warranty. There is no requirement for a vehicle to have a history of servicing at an official centre in order to qualify for the warranty; it will be applied from the date the vehicle undergoes a qualifying service at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota customers with service plans

Customers who have a service plan for their vehicle face no additional costs or changes to the terms of their plan. The warranty will be an additional, added-value benefit when they next undergo a qualifying service .

Toyota warranty and hybrid vehicles

For customers with hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Health Check forms part of the scheduled servicing. The warranty includes cover for the hybrid battery and components for up to 10 years/100,000 miles. After this time, customers can still extend the cover for up to 15 years with a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check.

I have a three-year-old Toyota with an active five-year warranty. Will the Toyota warranty affect this cover?

Vehicles purchased on or after 1 June 2021 are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for three years. The additional warranty benefit can be enjoyed following a qualifying service when the warranty expires, by having the car serviced at an approved Toyota centre.

I recently purchased a used car from a Toyota centre. When will it be eligible for the Toyota warranty?

Used cars purchased through the centre network are covered by a 12 months/unlimited mileage warranty. Toyota warranty benefits can be enjoyed when the car is brought in for its next scheduled service.

I already have an extended warranty. Can I swap onto this warranty you’re describing here?

Yes, you can cancel a Toyota extended warranty policy and receive a pro-rata refund, provided you haven’t made a claim. Once that is cancelled, you’ll then need to have a qualifying service to activate the new warranty. It may be better to wait until your next service is due! If you purchased an extended warranty through a Toyota centre, the terms and conditions for cancellation may be different.

Can I purchase the Toyota warranty?

No, the warranty is automatically activated following the completion of a full or interim service.

Does the warranty apply to light commercial vehicles and business vehicles?

Is a Hybrid Health Check still available to extend my Toyota vehicle’s hybrid battery cover?

The Hybrid Health Check is included as part of the service on vehicles less than 10 years old or having less than 100,000 miles on the clock. When a Toyota warranty contract is activated, it will include the hybrid battery cover. When the vehicle is no longer eligible for the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, extended warranty cover on the hybrid battery and components can be accessed through a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check, up to the vehicle reaching 15 years from the date of first registration.

My vehicle’s service schedule is every two years? How does this affect the warranty?

Where scheduled maintenance is every two years, a warranty contract will automatically be activated and cover the vehicle for two years/20,000 miles until the next qualifying service is due.

Will I receive confirmation that my vehicle is covered by the Toyota warranty?

Centres will advise customers if their vehicle is eligible for the Toyota warranty. When a qualifying service has been completed and the warranty contract has been active, customers will receive a follow-up email. Further questions arising can be answered by the centre which looks after your vehicle.

Does the introduction of the Toyota warranty affect the service plan I’ve purchased for my vehicle?

Customers with a service plan now get more for their money when their vehicle is eligible for a warranty, receiving an extra year’s warranty for their vehicle when it undergoes a qualifying service, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

If my vehicle is nine years and 364 days old on the day of service, will a Toyota warranty contract be activated and will it expire the next day?

A full contract will be activated every time an eligible vehicle undergoes a qualifying service. In this example the vehicle will be covered until one day before the 11th anniversary of its first date of registration.

Can I transfer the Toyota warranty to a new owner if I sell my vehicle?

If a vehicle is sold, the new owner inherits the benefits and can continue to extend the warranty by maintaining it at a Toyota centre. The warranty cover applies only to the serviced vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

Will the Toyota warranty cover expire if I am late booking my vehicle’s next service?

The vehicle must be serviced before the warranty expires to activate a new contract and maintain the cover. Local centres can provide further advice and help book your next qualifying service.

I own a GR Yaris with a GR Yaris Track Warranty. If I drive my car on track, will this affect my Toyota warranty cover?

Driving the GR Yaris on track would not invalidate the warranty, but terms and conditions still apply. The vehicle can be covered by both the track and Toyota warranties.

The warranty cover on my approved used Toyota includes one year’s AA roadside assistance cover. Is this available with the Toyota warranty?

Roadside cover is not included in the Toyota or Lexus warranty but can be purchased separately if required. The warranty is exceptional value, being provided at no extra cost to the customer beyond the menu pricing of their vehicle’s service.

Are there other benefits to using Toyota centres?

In addition to the warranty, servicing at a Toyota centre provides other significant benefits to customers. Work is carried out by qualified Toyota technicians, using Toyota-approved parts to ensure optimum performance.

Workshop teams are fully equipped and trained work on all the technologies featured in Toyota vehicles, including electrified powertrains and advanced handling and safety systems. Pricing is transparent with a service menu price guarantee for the scheduled servicing requirements for each model.

Toyota customer-focused approach includes an online service booking facility at the customer’s preferred centre. Centres will also make servicing as convenient as possible, with collection and delivery, courtesy cars and while-you-wait servicing options.

  1. Hi, I live near Ayr and have a Toyota extended warranty. My Aygo broke down yesterday and the AA engineer told me the car would need to be repaired at a garage. When he discovered the Ayr Toyota dealership closed two weeks ago, he advised the next nearest dealership was in Glasgow, 35 miles from home. The Glasgow dealership informed him they could not look at the car until September.

My car has been recovered to my home. I wish to discuss having the car repaired by my local garage, under the extended warranty. I have spoken to your colleagues in the past about annual services carried out by my garage and was advised as long as they use Toyota approved parts there would be no problem. I would like the work to be carried out under the same agreement. My local garage has indicated they would do the work this week.

This has happened at the worst possible time. I am due to leave home on Monday 15th August and will be away for three months. I must have the car repaired by then.

Please respond quickly. I have several issue arising from this incident which depends on the car being repaired this week.

    Steve

  2. Hi. A couple of things.

    1. You say “Any existing defects present at the time of service are excluded from the warranty.” Presumably, if the vehicle was already in warranty the previous year where the defect occurred, and this was only picked up at the time of service, this WILL be covered under the warranty?

    2. Can you confirm that under this warranty, the cover on the traction battery for BEVs (BZ4X, UX300e etc) is actually 600,000 miles / 10 years?

    1. Hi Mark,

      1. Warranty is applied on a case by case basis, and it really depends on the defect present. It’s unlikely that a defect would be present without the owner realising, particularly if it was something major that needed attention. If an engine warning light was on, for example, and the owner made no attempt to contact a Toyota centre to report it, and just continued to drive the vehicle, causing further damage, this may not be covered by warranty. Ultimately, we need to have some kind of condition in place to prevent people bringing a neglected car to us and expecting us to fix it for free.

      2. Yes, that’s correct. Quite a while before anybody will need to worry about the tenth year though!

      Thanks

  3. My car got a 2 years warranty when I purchased it. I called Toyota one month ago because one of the back door couldn’t open and the staff who answered the call booked an appointment for me and asked me to bring the car in and fixed it for me. But just one day before the appointment I received a call from Toyota and she said I need to firstly pay £160 for an investigation fee before they can do anything! That is so wrong and i never been told I need to pay before I can use the warranty! I just canceled the appointment and will never come back again. The warranty is just a scam.

    1. Hi Coral,
      Thanks for your question.
It is normal for people to be charged a pre-authorisation fee when your vehicle is inspected under warranty.
If the issue with the vehicle is covered under warranty, you won’t be charged for the inspection fee.
      Thanks.

      1. Good Afternoon,

I brought a car from one of your showrooms at HW Moon Wigan. A Toyota Auris hybrid, on Thursday 18th August my car displayed a hybrid system error. So i took the car on Friday to my local toyota dealer vintage toyota Wakefield, for the car to be repaired. It is now been 6 days and i have still not recieved my car back yet, i have been calling both the HW Moon Wigan dealership and the Wakefield garage everday.

And now the dealer Steve from HW Moon Wigan showroom is asking for additional charge for checking the car. It has been 6 weeks since i brought the car on 28th June from the dealer it still has 12 months warranty on it, when i called the wakefield garage they said the dealer has to help pay for the additional charge. I am very angry for 6 days now i have been waiting for my car to be returned repaired and it has not even been seen yet nevermind be repaired both the wakefield garage and Wigan showroom are putting blame on each other, whilst i am left with no transportion. My job relies on having a car to get to and from work, if i don’t have a car how am i surpose to survive and feed my family if i can’t get to work. I have mentioned this concern to both steve the dealer and the wakefield garage, they don’t seem to care what so ever. I am disgusted i no longer want to deal with steve the dealer or the wakefield garage, i want a full refund or some kind of solution for this.

        Thank you.
Now asking for £190 before they touch my my car what can i do

      2. Hi Sufiyan,
        Thanks for your comment.
We are really sorry to hear about the inconvenience you have faced.
There is a charge for checking the vehicle as this requires labour from our technicians.
During this check, we will be able to check if the repairs are covered by warranty or not.

  4. If I Get my 2021 Toyota serviced at a non Toyota dealership in 2022 and 2023, would it still qualify for the 10 year warranty if I got it serviced at a Toyota dealership in 2024? It was bought at a Toyota Dealership who have told me that the 10 year warranty only applies if you continue getting every service at a Toyota dealership.

    1. Hi Mark,
      Thanks for your question.
There is no requirement for a vehicle to have a history of servicing at an official Toyota Centre in order to qualify for the warranty.
It will be applied from the date the vehicle is serviced at an approved Toyota Centre.
      Thanks.

  5. The panels underneath my Toyota have broken away and are hanging down, causing them to vibrate when using the car. I’ve been advised that it will be £114 for an investigation fee before anything can be done despite it being obvious what the issue is! Even though it’s a safety issue, the first date I was given was mid September at the earliest!
This is my first experience of dealing with Toyota and I’m not impressed. I have never been charged a pre-authorisation fee for any other make of car to be inspected under warranty, and there is no mention of this in any of the online documentation. When the car was purchased from Arnold Clark they held the Toyota franchise and I wouldn’t have been charged!!

    1. Hi Gordon,
      Thanks for your comment.
We are very sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the service provided.
It is normal for people to be charged a pre-authorisation fee when your vehicle is inspected under warranty.

  6. I own a 2011 iQ which now has hardly any paint left on the roof or bonnet plus its peeling on every panel around the windows. I’ve tried my local Toyota dealer and the one it was purchased from but despite it being acknowledged as a manufacturing fault, neither will repair it. They quote a 10 year cut-off date but this problem started well within that period so in my opinion should be covered. I understand that in other countries Toyota have extended the paint cover warranty for this problem to 12 and in Canada 14 years. Why not here? Hoping for a more positive answer from your team at Head Office. Thanks
    (Re-submitted correcting typo yes/years)

  7. I have Toyota Auris 2015 and have a warranty Toyota vehicles up to 10 years old are subject to a 100000 mileage limit. My car part of dash board is not working, I claimed a Toyota warranty however They said you need to do a diagnostic, but they told me to pay 140 pounds for a diagnostic.
when I need a warranty, I always pay each diagnostic, Which is a kind of fraud, or The staff do not know which warranty cover
    Many Thanks

    1. Hi Matt, thanks for your comment.

Each warranty claim must first be investigated by a registered Toyota Centre to establish the root cause of the fault. They team there will take a look to see if the issue is due to a manufacturing defect that may be covered under the Toyota warranty.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  8. Hi I got my GT86 rear light cluster fixed two years ago by local U.K. Toyota garage. Now the repaired rear light developed the same issue (water Ingres). The dealerships says there is no warranty on a warranty replaced item. How is this compatible with 10 year warranty. It does not make sense as my car is still less than 10 years old.
Thanks for shedding light on this.

    1. Hi Ergun, thanks for your comment.

The part replaced would’ve been covered by 12 months of manufacturing warranty, therefore it would not be eligible for warranty repair at this stage.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  9. Got a RAV4 2012 model. Bought this in 2020 at around 39K. Absolutely brilliant car. Registered it with Toyota Listers, at the same time been sold an extended warranty over the phone for £500 and also been sold the Roadside assistance for £75. The warranty is for vehicles not older than 10 years or 100000 miles. At this low mileage I thought maybe wise move to buy it

Last August went abroad. Suddenly at 56K one of the engine started shaking and the result ‎misfire and one of the fuel injectors was faulty. Toyota Roadside provided brilliant service, absolutely top. The extremely painful part is that I had to pay 1900 pounds to get all the injectors replaced and to get my vehicle back, I have a voice message confirmation of Toyota Listers that I must pay this bill and claim the money back in the UK, they assured me that I will get my money back from the warranty company. I didn’t had that kind of money. So I came back to the UK without my car, started working and paid the bill off asap. In the UK I did email Toyota and they are saying now that because u never serviced it with Toyota u loose the right of the warranty, the strange thing is that I have never been told that my car has to be serviced at Toyota, by selling me this warranty over the phone the lady at listers forgot the most important detail, on all the brochures and leaflets I have, no where is being clearly described that u MUST service your car with Toyota to keep the warranty valid. The agony I had to go through to earn this money back pay for the car and get my family back in the UK. I’m now in the process to speak to the motor ombudsman as Listers Toyota refused to help and did not want to cooperate and they clearly take side of their employee who according to her did inform me about the obligatory service with Toyota. For those who had similar issues please raise this as they are literally ripping off their own customers.
