How to connect your phone to your Toyota

The multimedia system in your Toyota includes Bluetooth so you can connect your phone to safely make hands-free calls, and to stream music or podcasts. Additionally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – which are now available in many Toyota vehicles – put the best features of your smartphone directly on your Toyota’s touchscreen display.

Please check with your local dealer to ensure this functionality is available in your chosen Toyota model.

The short films below show you how to connect your phone to your Toyota by pairing it via Bluetooth. Continuing reading for an overview of the process, or click the link to see it in your specific Toyota.

How to connect your phone using Bluetooth

The straightforward process begins by turning on Bluetooth on your smartphone and putting it in pairing mode.

In the car, press the ‘Phone’ button on the steering wheel or ‘Register phone’ on the touchscreen. In some models, you may have to select the ‘Phone’ option from the touchscreen menu too. If you are prompted to register a Bluetooth device, select ‘Yes’ or ‘Add’ on the touchscreen display. Allow up to 30 seconds for a list of available Bluetooth devices to appear on the screen.

Choose your phone from the list by selecting it on the touchscreen. Accept the pairing prompt on your phone if required – just check that the numbers displayed on both screens match. On some models, you may have to select ‘OK’ on the touchscreen once the connection is complete.

That’s it – your phone is registered and connected to your Toyota. Now you can wirelessly stream music and podcasts and safely make hands-free calls.

Using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enable you to use your Toyota’s touchscreen display to access features directly on your phone. This uses a wired connection using your normal charging cable.

Begin by inserting your normal charging cable into your phone and your Toyota’s USB socket. Your Toyota’s touchscreen display will prompt you to enable Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Press the appropriate button on the touchscreen to confirm the connection. Next, your Toyota’s display will show compatible app icons. Simply press the app icon on the screen to access it.

  1. Hi I have recently bought a Toyota ago (automatic) and I’m trying to connect my iPhone to the screen so you can use all the apps and it doesn’t seem to be working it’s saying download to the app on the phone please advise

  2. Apple car play was so complicated to set up connected services & then there are none available yet. Apple car play will not work wirelessly in the new Yaris 2020. There is no navigation available. Many times had to resort to a map, yes old fashioned paper map because I have no mobile phone service, no navigation, no embedded esim.
The tyre wear is ridiculous. 5 new Yaris’s in 10 years & tyres are just getting stupid.3,500 miles & they are more than half worn.
I love the fuel economy but I think Toyota & I will be parting company next year. Move with the times. Apple car play alone is fine in a city, but not in rural Devon & Cornwall.

    1. Hi Nicky,

Thanks for your feedback, and sorry to hear you’re not happy with your car.

Apple CarPlay can be activated by simply plugging the phone in via USB. There is no other setup needed. If you’re going to be travelling into an area with no reception, your phone should still be able to navigate because it stores the directions when you begin the journey.

We are very surprised to hear about the tyres. They are wear and tear items, and they’re life depends on driving style. If you think they are wearing to fast, there maybe an wheel alignment issue. Your Toyota centre will be able to help you with this.

      Thanks

  3. I have recently bought Toyota Yaris 2014, automatic one. Is there any way I can use Android Auto on it? I drive long distances & using maps on car’s display would be really helpful. Thank you

  4. Just bought a Toyota Yaris 2019 and my iPhone is not connecting (specially Spotify) when it’s charging through usb cable. Any specific reason for that? Can I change the set up? Help me please.

  5. This morning, I asked your customer service about Aygo how to connect to the mobile app, file number CASE1709383, and received the reply have no support service for Google Map in the car.
I refer to your youtube demonstration as very easy, only pairing the mobile phone in the car by Bluetooth and then inserting a USB cable, and the display screen can see the functions of the mobile phone but not mentioned cannot support Google map.
Anyway, what programs are available for download? Just only download Apple car play / Android auto? It doesn’t seem to be working even downloading to the app on the phone, please advise.
    Many thanks.

  6. Seems to be a place to enter a preselected phone number in the left side of my Toyota Yaris entertainment center but how do I use it. It states press and hold doing this gets the phone list from my phone touching the number for HOME for instance does nothing. Where am I going wrong?
Will you email me the answer ?
    Regards
    John
