How to connect your phone to your Toyota

The multimedia system in your Toyota includes Bluetooth so you can connect your phone to safely make hands-free calls, and to stream music or podcasts. Additionally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – which are now available in many Toyota vehicles – put the best features of your smartphone directly on your Toyota’s touchscreen display.

Please check with your local dealer to ensure this functionality is available in your chosen Toyota model.

The short films below show you how to connect your phone to your Toyota by pairing it via Bluetooth. Continuing reading for an overview of the process, or click the link to see it in your specific Toyota.

How to connect your phone using Bluetooth

The straightforward process begins by turning on Bluetooth on your smartphone and putting it in pairing mode.

In the car, press the ‘Phone’ button on the steering wheel or ‘Register phone’ on the touchscreen. In some models, you may have to select the ‘Phone’ option from the touchscreen menu too. If you are prompted to register a Bluetooth device, select ‘Yes’ or ‘Add’ on the touchscreen display. Allow up to 30 seconds for a list of available Bluetooth devices to appear on the screen.

Choose your phone from the list by selecting it on the touchscreen. Accept the pairing prompt on your phone if required – just check that the numbers displayed on both screens match. On some models, you may have to select ‘OK’ on the touchscreen once the connection is complete.

That’s it – your phone is registered and connected to your Toyota. Now you can wirelessly stream music and podcasts and safely make hands-free calls.

Using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enable you to use your Toyota’s touchscreen display to access features directly on your phone. This uses a wired connection using your normal charging cable.

Begin by inserting your normal charging cable into your phone and your Toyota’s USB socket. Your Toyota’s touchscreen display will prompt you to enable Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Press the appropriate button on the touchscreen to confirm the connection. Next, your Toyota’s display will show compatible app icons. Simply press the app icon on the screen to access it.

  1. Hi, I’m thinking about buying a 19 plate (registered April 2019) rav 4. Is android auto included or is there a system update available? I’m in the UK.

    1. Hi Alan,
      Thanks for getting in touch.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were introduced to the RAV4, from factory, for the model year 2020.
Most 2019 RAV4 models can get the retrofit, but not Icon models.
      Thanks.

      1. Hi, can I get android auto on a 2018 plate corolla icon tech uk ?

I’ve tried contacting the dealer twice, no response.

      2. Hi Paul,
        Thank you for your comment.
The retrofit is only available for the MY19 Corolla, so it will not be available for a 2018 model.
If you can provide us with your reg, we can confirm this for you.
        Thanks.

    1. Hi there,
      Thanks for your comment.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes as standard for our new vehicles, and a retrofit is available for certain 2019 and 2020 models.
However, due to compatibility factors, it is not possible to retrofit this to earlier models.
So, if Apple CarPlay is essential for you, we would recommend looking at models that are new from factory. Always check the specification to make sure that this is included.
      Thanks.

    1. Hi David,
      Thanks for contacting us.
Due to system incompatibility, there is no Android Auto retrofit available for the C-HR.
      Thanks.

  3. Hi, ive been quoted £80 by the Toyota garage to retrofit apple car play to a Rav4 69 plate. I saw a post on here back in November from you guys suggesting it should be £50….. can you shed any light on this at all?

    1. Hi Becky,
      Thanks for your comment.
The Apple CarPlay retrofit for the RAV4 is £50 when carried out as part of a service, but costs £150 if completed as stand-alone work.
      Thanks.

As we are Toyota UK, we can only comment on the availability of the retrofit in the UK. We would recommend contacting Toyota in your region for further information.
