Toyota Auris owners – 12 volt flat batteries

2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid

As part of Toyota’s rigorous quality control programme, we have investigated the cause of a 12 volt flat battery issue that has left some Toyota Auris drivers unable to start their cars after only a short period without use, usually a couple of days.

We would like to apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience that may have occurred as a result of this issue. But we can now confirm that the cause has been identified and a permanent solution developed.

The following information only applies to any Toyota Auris (including Hybrid) produced between December 2012 and February 2014. If you have an Auris produced after February 2014 your vehicle is not affected by this issue. No other models are involved.

Toyota Auris Hybrid Flat Battery: What causes the issue?

The issue is caused when the hazard switch is partially depressed for a very short period of time, incorrectly activating the car’s CAN-bus electrical communications system. This draws a constant flow of current that can discharge the 12 volt battery if the car is left unused for several days.

How can I prevent this from occurring?

Toyota has published a Technical Service Bulletin to its dealer network advising them of a permanent solution to this issue. The bulletin contains information and software files that will enable technicians to modify the software of the car’s combination meter. This update will prevent the incorrect activation of the CAN-bus system and prevent any potential flat battery concerns arising from this area of the vehicle.

If you still have concerns regarding the 12 volt battery of your current generation Toyota Auris then we recommend you get in touch with your nearest Toyota dealer for further assistance. http://www.toyota.co.uk/find-a-dealer

      1. Hi Josbin, thanks for your comment.

If you believe that there is an issue with the battery in your vehicle, we’d recommend getting in touch with your local Toyota Centre. The team there can review this in person and investigate further if necessary.

        Thanks.

  2. I have a similar problem where if the car is left more than a few days in cold weather the 12V battery runs down. I currently have a trickle charger connected which is not very convenient but better than not being able to go anywhere. The car registration is HF64JGV and is an Auris. Could this have been built near the end of the date range where a problem with the 12V battery was identified.

  5. I have a Toyota Auris 2015 Icon+ Hybrid. I am having this exact issue. That battery cannot hold a charge for more than a day. I was assured by the mechanics at Steven Eagell Toyota the battery is fine, but I am surprised they did not look at the issue you explained.

Should I rasie this to them or do you think my fault is a different problem owing hat it is post 2014?

However, your Auris was produced in September 2016, meaning it is not affected by this issue.

  8. Hi
I have a Toyota Auris hybrid 2013 (VX63UKT). I have the same issue with my 12v batterie. I have been several times at my local Toyota garage where they told my car and battery is faultless but time to time I have the same issue, recently more regularly. They get to this conclusion after they run a vehicle diagnostic.

    1. Hi Andras,
We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.
Is there anything we can do to assist you further at this time?
      Thanks.

      1. Hi ToyotaUK,

Appreciated for your reply. This seems to be a manufacture issue that cause me 3 times going to garage under a year and each cost couple of hundred out from my pocket, not included road side assistance cost. With each visitation to the Toyata garage same feedback that there isn’t any issue with battery.
Shouldn’t this information in regards to 12 volt flat batteries, been informed to each Toyota garage?
