The Toyota Prius+ has been named as What Car? magazine’s Green MPV of the Year 2012.
The award, presented in association with EDF Energy, takes into account the findings of the What Car? True MPG programme, which provides real-world fuel economy and emissions data, gathered by What Car? engineers.
Prius+ is Europe’s first full hybrid seven-seat MPV. The car’s hybrid system combines a 60KW electric motor and a 100bhp 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine to achieve exceptional efficiency and smooth, refined performance.
It allows drivers to choose between three “on-demand” driving modes, including ECO and POWER, as well as a full EV electric mode, for ultra quiet, zero emissions running on the electric motor alone.
Priced from £26,195, Prius+ is available in two trim levels – T Spirit and T4. Equipment includes keyless entry and start, as well as a smooth, electronic CVT automatic gearbox. Satellite navigation and cruise control are among the options you can choose.
The What Car? test team reported: “In our True MPG tests Prius+ performed well, better than any other seven-seat MPV we’ve tested so far.
“As well as giving Prius+ green credentials that no other seven-seat MPV can match, its low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions make it cheap to run as a company car and mean that you don’t pay any road tax.
“Prius+ is as practical as a good MPV should be, too. Clever packaging means there’s space for five adults to sit in comfort. Each of the middle-row seats slides, folds and reclines individually, so you can share out space between the second- and third-row seats.
“The boot is a good size in five-seat mode, too.”
What Car? Editor Chas Hallett (above, left) presented the award to Jon Williams, Toyota GB’s President and Managing Director.
Commenting on the award, Chas said: “No other seven-seat MPV can run emission-free in town for short periods the way the Toyota Prius+ can.
“It’s also very well equipped and specified, economical to run and comes with the reassurance of Toyota’s five-year/100,000-mile warranty. It’s a great car that allows motorists who need seven seats to reduce their impact on the environment.”
