Toyota Yaris service intervals: all models covered

If you own a Toyota Yaris, then it will need regular servicing to help keep it in the best shape. Here we list Toyota Yaris service intervals for each generation of the car. We highlight the different sizes and types of engines officially sold by UK Toyota dealers to help you know when your Toyota Yaris needs servicing.

These intervals are for models of Toyota Yaris that were sold via the official UK Toyota dealer network. If you drive a grey import version of the Yaris, some of which were known as the Toyota Vitz up until 2019, then this will be a useful reference for your car, too.

First-generation Toyota Yaris Mk1 service intervals

Years: 1999-2005

The first-generation Toyota Yaris was known internally by the model code XP10, and the car was sold as the Vitz in Japan, or the Echo in North America and Australia. In the UK, the Toyota Yaris was initially sold with 1.0 or 1.3-litre petrol engines, while 1.5-litre petrol arrived with the Yaris T-Sport in 2001. A 1.4 D4-D diesel was also sold in the UK from 2002 until sales finished in 2005.

  • 1.0 petrol: Annually/10,000 miles

Second-generation Toyota Yaris Mk2 service intervals

Years: 2005-2011

Called the XP90 internally, the Toyota Yaris Mk2 arrived in the UK in 2005, and with it came slightly revised engines. The 1.0 here is a three-cylinder, and while the old car’s 1.3 was initially carried over, it was replaced by a more modern 1.33 in 2009. The 1.4 D4-D diesel was also offered again, while another sporty model, the Yaris TS, came with a 1.8-litre petrol engine in 2007.

Years: 2011-2020

The XP130 generation Toyota Yaris was the first to be offered with a 1.5 hybrid powertrain, alongside regular 1.0 and 1.33 petrol versions and the 1.4 diesel, although the latter wasn’t available through the car’s entire production run. Later in its life, the Yaris GRMN was launched in 2017 with a 1.8 supercharged petrol engine.

  • 1.0 petrol: Annually/10,000 miles

  • 1.5 hybrid petrol: Annually/10,000 miles

Years: 2020 onwards

The current Toyota Yaris was launched in 2020 and is known within Toyota as the XP210. The main mechanical change from its predecessors is that the Yaris is now hybrid only, with no petrol or diesel versions offered. All models feature the same set-up of a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and compact battery providing assistance.

As well as the standard supermini, the Yaris name has also been given to other compact models that use the similar running gear. Here we highlight the service intervals for those, too.

Toyota Yaris Verso service intervals

Years: 1998-2005

The Yaris Verso was based on the first-generation Yaris XP10 and added a longer wheelbase and boxy rear end to create a small MPV. In Japan, the Yaris Verso was known as the Toyota Fun Cargo. UK cars came with a 1.3-litre petrol engine, while a 1.4 D4-D diesel was offered from 2001 onwards.

  • 1.4 diesel: Annually/10,000 miles

Toyota GR Yaris service intervals

Years: 2020 onwards

The high-performance version of the current Yaris is different enough to be considered a separate model. It has a unique three-door body and a 268hp 1.6 turbo petrol engine with a manual gearbox and four-wheel drive. Thanks to its rally-focused character, its service intervals are more frequent than they are for the standard Yaris.

In addition, the GR Yaris is subject to a ‘Safety Check’ every six months. As of 2022, this costs £75, unless it coincides with the car’s service, in which case there’s no extra cost.

  • 1.6 turbo petrol: Annually/6,000 miles

Years: 2021 onwards

The small SUV variant of the Yaris was launched 12 months after the XP210 supermini and features a variation of the platform used by that car. That means it has the same hybrid tech under the skin, and service intervals that are identical to the superminis.

  • 1.5 hybrid 2WD: Annually/10,000 miles
  • 1.5 hybrid AWD: Annually/10,000 miles

    Is the 6 month safety check compulsory to qualify for the 10 year relax warranty or does the annual service fulfill the requirement on a September 2021 registered GR Yaris

    1. Hi Darren,
      Thanks for your comment.
      The 6 month safety check only applies when combined with 12 months service to qualify for Relax.
      If the 6 month safety check is not done, it depends very much on the component failure and by not doing the safety service did this influence the failure.
      The safety check is more focused on safety like brakes for example, which will be more impacted especially if used on track days verse normal general road use.

  2. Hi Toyota,
    My new Yaris has had another hybrid malfunction while driving on a highway. Car has been with the dealership for two weeks now and I’ve just been informed that replacement for the transmission will be delivered on March 31st. Thus I will not get the car back until early April. On top of this, the car has been recalled twice (seatbelts and breaks) in less than a year. People choose Toyota for their (alleged) reliability, not for having two recalls, two hybrid malfunctions, and not getting to using their car for months. Not my first Toyota, but most likely my last one. L.

  3. I have a Toyota yaris 07 plate automatic,
    The reverse camera has stopped working and just has a warning exclamation mark in the screen, please can anyone give an explanation on how to fix this.

    I have a 2021 Yaris Dynamic and it’s frankly, a wonderful car in so many ways that I find it almost impossible to fault. However, the entertainment system is very dull indeed – it works OK and I have the JBL speakers and amp but the interface is drab. I notice the Yaris Cross has the updated system but I wondered if there will be an update to the version I have? By way of a routine download etc? The hardware is fine but the software needs a refresh.

    I have a 2021 GR Yaris registered 25th November. I have received varying advice from different Toyota dealerships as regards the servicing requirements for maintaining validity of the warranty.

    Is it correct that the warranty remains valid on the condition that the car is serviced on schedule using only genuine Toyota parts and fluids, regardless of whether this is performed by a main dealer or an independant garage? Does this apply both to the ‘Safety Check’ and the annual/6,000 services?

      There is no obligation for you to use a Toyota centre, as long as you stick to the service schedule and genuine parts are used. Of course, given the specialist nature of GR Yaris, we’d recommend using a Toyota centre.

        Thank you for the confirmation. Am I correct in my understanding that this applies to both servicing and ‘Safety Checks’?

        Also, if serviced by an independant, does the warranty period extend to 6 years or 10 as per ‘Toyota Relax’?

        The safety check doesn’t form part of the warranty requirements, but we recommend it for a vehicle of this type. The standard manufacturer warranty can be maintained by getting the vehicle serviced anywhere on time, using genuine parts.

        Once your manufacturer warranty runs out, you can activate the Relax warranty by getting a service at a Toyota centre. More here:

  6. Due to distance from my Toyota Yaris Dealer I am going to get my 2012 (1.33 petrol engine) serviced at a nearer garage. It will be a 60,000 mile service is it possible to find out what needs to be done for this service so I can ensure the garage undertakes necessary work?

      The Yaris is a common vehicle so all independent dealerships have information on what work needs to be done, and will be very familiar with the vehicle.


  7. Is the damper stay on a 2010 registered Yaris covered by warranty. The has covered 82,000 miles since new .

  8. I have a Toyota Yaris 14 plate and do very little mileage under 3000 yearly. My service is due soon and I am just wondering if I need to replace the spark plugs. They were replaced last year for the first time since I’ve had the car (6 years) Do I need to replace these yearly? As they are very costly or how often do I need to replace them.

  9. I bought a 2 year old used Yaris MK4 Yaris ’70 plate from a Toyota dealer and was told it still had a years warrantee on it. I have since found out that this year of production had a 5 year warrantee. is this correct?
