Exploring the Toyota Proace City: performance and capabilities

Following its world debut at the 2019 Commercial Vehicle Show, we wanted to explore the new Toyota Proace City compact van by providing greater detail in three key areas: performance and capabilities, practical and versatile design, and its safety, comfort and convenience features.

Proace City: performance and capabilities

The Proace City range meets a wide range of business needs, with different loading and seating configurations and powertrain options.

The compact van is presented in two different lengths – short at 4.4m and long at 4.7m. Both can be specified with three front seats, and as panel or glass vans; the long version is also available as a crew cab. The passenger version is offered with five or seven seats both in the short and long version.

The dimensions and packaging give Proace City excellent load capacity, with maximum volume from 3.3m3 (short model) to 4.3m3 (long version with Smart Cargo option). Notably the Toyota is one of few vehicles in its class that can accommodate two Euro pallets.

Adding the Smart Cargo system option gives a best-in-class load length capacity of 3.1m for the short version and 3.4m for the long, while the maximum payload is another class-best figure at one tonne (both versions).

For those who need to carry even greater or heavier loads, the van can tow braked trailers up to 1.5 tonnes. Asymmetrical rear doors (glazed or unglazed) or a top-hinged tailgate can be specified.

Proace City will be available with a range of petrol and diesel powertrains offering a power spread from 75 to 130hp, and a choice of five- or six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions.

The model range amply covers business and fleet customer requirements in the segment in terms of capability, versatility, performance and efficiency, ensuring it can realise its potential to strengthen Toyota’s position in the LCV market.

  1. I’m very interested in the short Proace City Verso with 7 seats but wondering if the petrol engines will be PSA Group engines or Toyota’s own?

    1. Hello Gavin,

Thanks for getting in touch, it’s great to hear that you’re interested in the Proace City. The petrol engines will be PSA Group.

      Thanks.

      1. Thanks for the reply. I’m a little disappointed that the petrol engines aren’t Toyota’s own, but I’m hoping that reliability isn’t going to be an issue if Toyota are going to offer a 5 year warranty for this vehicle. When is the Proace City due to be launched in the UK?

      2. PSA have a solid reputation within the Light Commercial Vehicle sector, and we have cooperated very closely on quality assurance. This is backed up by our 5 Year Warranty, as you alluded to. Proace City will be available early next year. Please do keep an eye on our social media channels and blog for further announcements. Also, feel free to let us know where you are based, and we’d be happy to put you in touch with your nearest Toyota commercial vehicle specialist. Thanks.

  2. I have a Proace City long wheel base and love the van but i was wondering if Toyota will ever bring the Proace City with 5 seats like they have in Europe?
