What are the towing capacities of the latest Toyota models?

What are the towing capacities of the latest Toyota models? This is one of the most frequently asked questions received through our busy social media platforms, and it is coming up more regularly as families plan staycation holidays and business owners think about the capabilities of new fleet purchases.

The following table lists all new Toyota models currently on sale and their maximum applicable towing figures. The blank spaces represent models that have either not been engineered to tow or are not homologated to tow in the United Kingdom. In these cases, luggage carrying capacity can always be increased with official Toyota touring accessories.

What is the difference between braked and unbraked trailers?

Most larger trailers and caravans feature an integrated braking system that is activated through a mechanical link from the tow bar. This means that when the tow car brakes, the inertia of this force prompts the application of what is known as the ‘overrun brakes,’ which are installed to reduce the brake effort carried out by the tow car. Smaller, lighter trailers with no integrated braking system are called ‘unbraked’ and are entirely free-wheeling. These trailers therefore rely on the tow car to carry out all the brake effort.

Why is nose weight important?

Nose weight refers to the maximum vertical load that is exerted on the tow bar by the attached trailer or caravan (this also applies to tow bar-mounted cycle carriers). This figure is established by Toyota in order to maintain a safe level of traction and steering through the front wheels.

  1. Could you please tell me do I need to go through a official dealer to fit a tow bar to my Rav4 Phev. I’m in the UK

  2. mk7 2.4 hilux towed my empty 16 ft caravan with my truck for the first time and going up a slight incline on the m1 my foot was flat to the floor in the right gear and struggling to get 50mph and a rav 4 came sailing past me towing a longer caravan and away he went now i have had many hilux since the 80s so which one is the work horse the hilux or the rav 4 ?
this 2.4 engine is a absolute waste it is tow small for the truck and the torque numbers may work on paper but in the real world the engine cant maintain the torque numbers and trying to get it to pull up away on a hill is just a waste of time and all this brings me a max of 25mpg worst hilux i have ever had out of the 10 new ones i have had wish i had kept mo 61 reg 30l .but its made one thing clear its the last one i will buy

    1. I use a Hilux d4d for work towing loaded trailers does yours not have the power button behind the gearstick mines a 21 plate but I’ve had Toyota Hilux since 2015 .pushing power button gives you extra for towing heavy loads

    1. Hi Gillian,
Please provide the vehicle registration so we can look into this for you.
      Thanks.

  3. Hii. I have 2020 model Corolla 1.8 liter Plug in hybrid. How many kilograms does my car pull a trailer with brakes?

  4. i note that you have not provided details for the Prius Plug-in. Why is this?
can you provide details of the Nose Weight for this vehicle please.

    1. Hi Paul,
      Thanks for your comment.
Please provide your Vehicle Registration so that we can look into this for you.
      Thanks.

  5. Many guides say to calculate your maximum tow weight you subtract the first weight on the VIN from the second. This amounts to less than 3500kg on our 2021 Hilux double cab. Can you advise why this is, and if the hilux can tow 3500kg despite this?
    With thanks

  6. Can someone please contact me. I’ve emailed directly through the web page but had nothing back. My 2021 highlander with factory fitted tow bar, appears to be well outside of UK legislation regarding tow ball height (its over 500mm off the ground, max should be 420mm). Even when fully laden, if it were to drop 800mm the wheels would be scraping the wheel arches.

I can’t understand how this could happen and how the factory fit accessory could be type approved/homologated. But I’m extremely concerned my car is not road worthy and therefore uninsured when towing.

    1. Hi Anthony, thanks for your question.

Please contact your Toyota Centre regarding this, are they are best placed to advise you and inspect the vehicle.

      Thanks.

  7. hi, i have a toyota verso icon tss valvematic 2017 number plate sc66 bwz. Am i right in saying it can tow 1300kg? thanks

    1. Hi Gab, thanks for your query.

The figure authorities use to enforce the maximum towing capacity of a vehicle can be found on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate. Reading from top to bottom, these will be the gross vehicle weight (the maximum mass of the vehicle including occupants, fuel and load), the gross vehicle train weight (the combined maximum mass of the vehicle and trailer) and the maximum loads across the front and rear axles respectively. In order to create a recommended maximum towing capacity, vehicle manufacturers usually deduct the gross vehicle weight from the gross vehicle train weight.

For more information on your specific vehicle, please consult your owner’s manual. This can be found online here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/customer/manuals

      Hope this helps.

      Thanks.

  8. Just read that Corolla 1.8 can tow 1300kgs braked trailer and 750kgs unbraked. Your table says 750 braked – which òne is correct. Masda CX5 might be a better choice for my 1200ks caravan.

    1. Morning Ray,

We can confirm that both the current Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Touring Sports has a towing capacity of 750kg braked, as detailed under the ‘Weights and Towing Capacity’ section in the specifications: https://brnw.ch/21wI7h9

Sorry for any disappointment this causes. If you’re looking to tow more, check out the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

      Thank you.
