The Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain in your Toyota combines the power of a petrol engine with two electric motors to give you exceptional fuel efficiency and smooth, near-silent driving.

Our owners tell us that as well as proving rewarding to drive, the hybrid system is simple to use, and hugely reliable – but even so, this innovative technology needs specialist expertise to keep it in top condition…

The Toyota Hybrid Health Check is the best way to ensure the optimal performance of your vehicle.

At its core, the health check includes a series of specialist inspections, including the following:

We investigate the status and condition of your Toyota ‘traction’ battery. This is the battery that powers your car’s wheels, and is separate to the 12v starter battery that’s used to start the engine.

The next step is to check and confirm the car’s fuel consumption, to ensure that the petrol engine and electric motors are working in harmony.

Finally, we examine the car’s Hybrid cooling systems, to ensure that the arrangement is working at optimal temperature.

The technicians that carry out these tests are respected as experts in all aspects of hybrid technology.

At the end of the test, our experts will explain the test results to you clearly and simply, to help you fully understand the condition of your Toyota hybrid.

You’ll also be given an extensive and accessible written report that will provide you with the itemised information from your Hybrid Health Check, helping you make an informed decision about any further action you might feel is required.

  1. Hi, the main Toyota UK website says there is a 15 year limit on the battery health check/battery cover, but above you say the health check is only up to 10 years. Can you clarify please?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Clare,
This information is out of date.
For customers with hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Health Check forms part of the scheduled servicing. The Relax warranty includes cover for the hybrid battery and components for up to 10 years/100,000 miles. After this time, customers can still extend the cover for up to 15 years with a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check.
      Thanks.

  2. If I have changed my car battery when can a hybrid check be completed? Someone advised I would have to wait 500 miles before checks can be done?

      1. My auris is 7 years old and done 140k
I had the service but they didn’t not do the hybrid check , is my battery warranty still extended.
Or do I need to ask them to do the hybrid check.

    1. Hi Trevor,
In addition to the manufacturer warranty, your Toyota Hybrid battery can benefit from up to 15 years of warranty in total.
With every service at a Toyota dealer, the warranty is extended for a further 12 months, up to the 15th year of registration.
Please provide the vehicle registration so we can check if your vehicle is covered.
      Thanks.

      1. Hi Trevor,
Currently your vehicle is not covered by warranty as the vehicle must be serviced at a Toyota Centre to activate this.
With every service at a Toyota dealer, the warranty is extended for a further 12 months, up to the 15th year of registration.
Please speak to your nearest Toyota Centre to see what options are available.
        We hope this helps.
        Thanks.

  3. Just had my Toyota Corolla first service ( mileage 4334 ) Service OK, but this was written on the Hybrid Health Check Failed certificate and I don’t know what it means, or what to do to put this right
    Hybrid Health Check Failed
The system has detected a recent clearance of DTCs.
DTCs may have been cleared deliberately or if the auxiliary battery has been disconnected. It is not possible to complete a HHC if DTCs have been cleared recently. There is normally a time/mileage restriction between DTC clearance and HHC. Please check your local market conditions on DTC clearance.

    1. Hi John,
      Thanks for your comment.
Is your Toyota Centre looking into this for you, or is there anything we can do to assist you at this time?
      Thanks.

  4. We have a Corolla hybrid which is just over three years old to maintain the warranty on the battery at what stage does the battery have to be checked please?

      1. Thank you, but I have been told that to maintain the battery warranty for 15 years the checks are free for a certain number of years and after that you have to pay for the battery check. The question is, at what year from the vehicle being new does the owner have to pay for the check ie is it 3 years, 5 years etc?

  5. Hi, my car was serviced and I was told the hybrid health check failed. The car is 2014 and it is still under warranty as we service it yearly with toyota. Now I am being told that for the to diagnose the hybrid health check I should pay £140 for diagnosis and they will check if the problem with the hybrid is covered under warranty. Please can you explain why I have to pay this £140 for diagnosis and why won’t the hybrid issue to covered on the warranty. Thanks.

  6. I have a 2018 Toyota Auris Hybrid Excel 1.8. Bought on 2020 direct from a Toyota dealer. This morning started the car. It started with “EV” sign and after a while engine started. Normally the engine stops after about 2-3 mins and the car goes back to “EV” again. But this time the engine kept running and after about 2 mins started showing low hybrid battery sing on dashboard. Can you please explain the reason for this? This car is used daily for commuting. Thanks.

    1. Hi Zahid,
      Thanks for your comment.
The time spent in EV varies based on a number of factors.
However, if you feel that there is an issue with your vehicle please contact your Toyota Centre.
      Thanks.

    1. Hi Siddik,
      Thanks for your comment.
When the vehicle is no longer eligible for the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, extended warranty cover on the hybrid battery and components can be accessed through a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check, up to the vehicle reaching 15 years from the date of first registration.
Please contact your Toyota Centre for more information.
      Thanks.

  7. hi, i have a 2010 toyota prius which originally was covered up to the 10th anniversary of registration for HHC, now toyota have changed this to 15 years will this apply to my vehicle or is it only for vehicles registered after the ammended 15 years ammendment? thanks

    1. Hi Mike,
      Thanks for your question.
The extension to the Hybrid Health Check covers all vehicles, provided that the vehicle meets the requirements.
Your Toyota Centre is best place to advise you on whether your vehicle is covered.
      Many thanks.

  8. Hi
I have just bought a 2017 Auris from a dealer. I asked the dealer to give me a copy of hybrid check report, 12v battery check report but they said they could not and the tests were already passed. They only gave me a VSR copy. The service book said it clearly that the technician should provide a written report of the Hybrid system check information?! Does it matter to the hybrid warranty? Is it the correct practice?

Also the car has a lot of white smoke when starting the drive and parking the car yesterday in 0 degree. Is it caused by the weather?

    1. Hi Peggy, thanks for your question.

Our Warranty Team have advised that your Toyota Centre should be able to provide a copy of the hybrid health check report. However, it is not essential to have this document. The hybrid health check will register electronically within the warranty system and this is what is relied on, not the paper document. If you provide us with your Vehicle Registration, we can confirm whether the hybrid contract is registered.

Regarding your second question, we cannot advise on this without inspecting the vehicle. If you believe there is an issue, please contact your Toyota Centre.

      Many thanks.
