The Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain in your Toyota combines the power of a petrol engine with two electric motors to give you exceptional fuel efficiency and smooth, near-silent driving.

Our owners tell us that as well as proving rewarding to drive, the hybrid system is simple to use, and hugely reliable – but even so, this innovative technology needs specialist expertise to keep it in top condition…

The Toyota Hybrid Health Check is the best way to ensure the optimal performance of your vehicle.

At its core, the health check includes a series of specialist inspections, including the following:

We investigate the status and condition of your Toyota ‘traction’ battery. This is the battery that powers your car’s wheels, and is separate to the 12v starter battery that’s used to start the engine.

The next step is to check and confirm the car’s fuel consumption, to ensure that the petrol engine and electric motors are working in harmony.

Finally, we examine the car’s Hybrid cooling systems, to ensure that the arrangement is working at optimal temperature.

The technicians that carry out these tests are respected as experts in all aspects of hybrid technology.

At the end of the test, our experts will explain the test results to you clearly and simply, to help you fully understand the condition of your Toyota hybrid.

You’ll also be given an extensive and accessible written report that will provide you with the itemised information from your Hybrid Health Check, helping you make an informed decision about any further action you might feel is required.

* The Toyota Hybrid Health Check is free with your scheduled servicing. If you’re not due a service, you can have the Check carried out, at a cost of £39.

As well as this is an extension to the warranty of your battery. With each Hybrid Health Check you will get up to 1 year or 10,000 miles extension (whichever comes soonest) on your hybrid battery cover which can be renewed up to the 10th anniversary of the car’s registration with no limit on total mileage.

  1. Toyota dealer told me if you change or disconnect the Prius Auxiliary battery then a fault code is recorded. When your Health check is done it fails because of this historic code, so dealer had to clear the fault and you have to do another 380 miles before check can be done again. A real pain especially as Prius Auxiliary batteries go flat after less than 2 weeks if the Prius is not used!

    1. Hi Richard,
Thanks for getting in touch. What you have been told is correct. If your vehicle is being rarely used, and provided that the vehicle is garaged, it may be worth using a trickle charger. Thanks.

  2. Very interesting.
I’m mostly interested in this part “We investigate the status and condition of your Toyota “traction” battery.”
Is there a standard method to determine the condition of the traction battery? Is there an example report of the battery condition please? That would be great to see.

    1. Hi Anton,

Thanks for getting in touch. During the Hybrid Health Check, as far as the Hybrid (traction) battery is concerned, the system checks the following:

      -Internal Resistance
      -Internal Voltage
      -Variation Check
      -Battery Temperature

      We hope this helps.

    1. Hi Dawn,

Thanks for getting in touch. We have no information as to whether a Toyota centre would charge for this, so would advise contacting your local Toyota centre directly. They will be best equipped to advise you further and inform you of any costs that may or not be involved.

      Thanks.

  3. If you have a Toyota service and a Hybrid Health check AND the car fails the health check do you still get 12 months warranty on the Hybrid System?

    1. Hi Richard,

Thanks for getting back in touch. The extension lasts for 12 months/10,000 miles (whichever comes sooner) and comes into play when a clear manufacturing defect can be proven by the dealer.

When an error code is spotted, it can commonly be considered a manufacturing defect. However, the dealer would need to confirm this for it to be claimed under warranty. For more clarity and specific information on your situation, we would recommend re-contacting your dealer.

      Thanks.

  4. My Toyota dealer did a Hybrid Health Check and they said they found a Error code so the automated check could not go any further, the dealer cleared the error code and said I had to cover another 600 miles before another health check can be carried out.

My question is if a Hybrid Error Code is found shouldn’t the dealer investigate, fix the fault and issue a new Hybrid Health Certificate, rather than just erase a code and send the customer off without a fix? Recording an Error is supposed to point to a problem outside of the normal operating parameters isn’t it?

    1. Hi Richard,

Thanks for getting in touch. What the centre have said is true in that once a fault code has been erased many miles have to be completed before another health check can be completed.

Without knowing anymore details we cannot really comment any further. However, if you would like to provide us with your reg or VIN we can take a look ourselves and see if we can put your mind at ease.

      Thanks.

  5. Hi our company’s HV batterys just failed on a Yaris 2016 with 92000 miles been serviced in house never had a hybrid health check dealer say batterys not covered under warranty

    1. Hi Richard,
Thanks for your comment. We’re sorry to hear about the issue you’re having with your car.
Our warranty covers any mechanical fault that is caused by a manufacturing defect.
In this case, we would recommend re-contacting your nearest Toyota centre to discuss this further as they are best placed to assess your car and recommend any necessary actions.
However, if you are unhappy with the diagnosis you have received, you can contact our customer relations team, here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/help-centre/email-us
      Thanks.

  6. To get the warranty extension, does the Toyota service history need to be continuous? I’m looking at a used 2013 Plug-in Prius which might not have continuous main dealer servicing. So if I take it to have a hybrid battery health check, will that give me an extra year of warranty?

Also, is it the same procedure for the plug-in prius with it’s 4.4kwh lithium ion battery?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Iain,
      Thanks for your comment.
Referring to the Hybrid Health Check extension, for the Hybrid battery ONLY, there is no need to have a continuous services history. It will apply from the moment you get an extended warranty contract until 1year/10,000 miles, whichever comes soonest.
Taxis can only have a maximum of 5 Hybrid Health Checks, and in all cases the Hybrid Health Check can be renewed up to the 15th anniversary of the car’s registration.
      Thanks.

  7. I had my first serviceon my C-HR, but the dealer hasn’t done the hybrid health check as it is an import car.Is this normal? What they have to do to check the health of hybrid system that can’t be done on an import car?

    1. Hi Ion,
      Thanks for contacting us.
Your Toyota Centre will not be able to carry out a Hybrid Health Check on an imported vehicle as the chassis number needs to be used in the process.
Imported chassis numbers will not be recognised by the database.
      Thanks.

  8. Hi if toyita have run a health check on my traction battery and gave me an extended warranty on the the traction battery of 1 year and 10000 miles and if my battery stop working under warranty will toyota replace it for free or if not that how will i be covered in warranty.

    1. Hi Syed, thanks for your comment.

This is something that the local Toyota Centre will need to look into and make a decision on.

      Thanks

  9. I’m hoping to buy a used hybrid Prius in the near future, but it’s likely that I’ll only be able to afford one that is 9 or 10 years old. Can I only have the hybrid health check and get the additional 1-year battery cover if my car is under 10 years old?

    1. Hi there.
Thank you for your interest in the Prius.
Hybrid battery cover with the Hybrid Health Check is only available for vehicles under 10 years old.
      Thanks.
