Toyota GB today announced it would recall a number of its Toyota iQ and first generation Prius models in the UK to carry out modifications to their braking and steering systems respectively.
It is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to contact registered owners and keepers by letter to advise them of the procedure for taking their vehicle to an authorised Toyota Centre for the necessary repair work to be undertaken free of charge.
The issue affecting iQ models involves 12,073 cars in the UK market, produced between October 2008 and May 2010. The concern relates to an inadequate cleaning process during manufacture of the brake tubes which could lead to foreign material passing into the brake master cylinder. This could lead to brake force reduction and increased pedal travel.
There have been six cases reported in the UK and there are no reports of accidents related to this condition anywhere in the world. Rectification involves the brake master cylinder and affected brake tube being replaced by the Toyota Centre.
First Generation Toyota Prius
The issue affecting the Prius involves 1,262 cars in the UK market, produced between January 2000 and May 2003. The concern relates to the electric power steering system, due to inadequate fixation of the nuts that secure the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly. If the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full-lock position, there is a possibility that the nuts may become loose. If the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the pinion shaft may become unstable which may cause power generated by the electric motor to not be fully transmitted, which could result in significant increased effort to turn the steering wheel and, in the worst case, the steering operation may be temporarily limited.
There have been 28 cases reported in the Japanese market, one in North America and no cases reported in Europe. Toyota Motor Corporation are still investigating whether any accidents are related to this condition. Rectification involves replacing the nuts which secure the pinion shaft.
Jon Williams, Managing Director of Toyota (GB) PLC, said, “This course of action underlines our commitment of customer service and ‘doing the right thing’ as our focus on safety continues, regardless of vehicle age. We will do our utmost to minimise the inconvenience caused to owners.”
