The cabin air filter is the secret to cleaner air in your vehicle. With the focus firmly on improving the quality of the air we breathe, a cabin air filter can prevent a range of pollutants – including dust, dirt, pollen and exhaust fumes – from entering your car.
Toyota offers a cabin air filter to maintain fresh air circulation on your car. Available in ‘Standard’ and ‘Enhanced’ variants, the filter is made of high quality, non-woven fabric that captures unwanted materials, and prevents them from entering the cabin. With an additional layer of activated charcoal, the Enhanced filter removes up to 25 percent more pollutants, and neutralises unpleasant odours.
It’s important to replace the cabin air filter regularly. It should be inspected every 10,000 miles to ensure that the performance of your car’s air conditioning remains optimal.
Your driving environment can increase the frequency of filter replacements. For instance, if you predominately drive in a congested city, the life-cycle of your filter may be reduced. Your Toyota dealer will be able to advise you on the filter’s condition at service time.
Don’t forget to maintain the additional filters in your Toyota too – carbon and engine air. The replacement times for these parts vary model to model, but your dealer will be able to advise.

Hello. I am interested in buying a Toyota C-HR. However, I was reading the very concerning report from Emissions Analytics which showed that the filter in this car only removes 1% of toxic particles. Could you let me know whether there have been any improvements made to your filters since 2018 when the report was done? I understand in comparison the Mercedes-S class filter removed 90% of toxic particles. Really love the C-HR so would be great if you could provide data to show that the filtration has since been improved and what percentage of toxic particles are now removed as a result of any improvements you have made. Firstly, it is important to remember that the air quality inside the vehicle will match that of the outside atmospheric air, and as such, filtered air would not expose any cabin occupants to more pollutants than if the windows of the vehicle were open, or if the journey were undertaken on foot or bicycle.
Filtration performance will vary depending on the condition of the filter. A filter that is not properly maintained will not be as effective, and we would always encourage our customers to ensure these are maintained correctly – for the Toyota C-HR this would be an inspection at every service (annually or every 10,000 miles), and replacement during a full service (every 2 years or 20,000 miles).
As a general rule, we advise customers who drive in polluted conditions to close all windows and roof and use the air recirculation function with A/C in the ‘on’ position to avoid the windows from misting. This should significantly reduce the pollution coming from the air outside. For people who frequently drive in heavily polluted areas, Toyota offers special filters with Active Charcoal and tighter meshing for better filtration. These filters are available at each retailer and can be fitted within a few minutes.

The CO2 level will go up very quickly doing this to levels that will have a significant effect on the driver’s cognitive function. I believe unknowingly leaving the recirculation button on could be the cause of many car accidents.
I would like to see cars in the future having inbuilt CO2 Monitors, PM2.5/10 air quality monitors inside and out and have automated control and warnings to ensure the CO2 level doesn’t go too high. But also lets you know when the outside air quality is bad. Cabin filters should be of a grade that filters PM2.5.
