Your car’s cabin air filter – what does it do?

The cabin air filter is the secret to cleaner air in your vehicle. With the focus firmly on improving the quality of the air we breathe, a cabin air filter can prevent a range of pollutants – including dust, dirt, pollen and exhaust fumes – from entering your car.

cabin air filter

Toyota offers a cabin air filter to maintain fresh air circulation on your car. Available in ‘Standard’ and ‘Enhanced’ variants, the filter is made of high quality, non-woven fabric that captures unwanted materials, and prevents them from entering the cabin. With an additional layer of activated charcoal, the Enhanced filter removes up to 25 percent more pollutants, and neutralises unpleasant odours.

It’s important to replace the cabin air filter regularly. It should be inspected every 10,000 miles to ensure that the performance of your car’s air conditioning remains optimal.

Your driving environment can increase the frequency of filter replacements. For instance, if you predominately drive in a congested city, the life-cycle of your filter may be reduced. Your Toyota dealer will be able to advise you on the filter’s condition at service time.

Don’t forget to maintain the additional filters in your Toyota too – carbon and engine air. The replacement times for these parts vary model to model, but your dealer will be able to advise.

You can find out more about air filters, and other Toyota parts on the designated section of the Toyota UK website, alternatively, visit your local Toyota dealer.

      Thanks.

  2. So my car is 2016 Auris Hybrid, used as a taxi, when should the pollen filter be changed? Every year and at 10k intervals? Also the engine air filter, is that inspection at 20k and replacement at 40k?

    1. Hello Syed,

Thanks for getting in touch. If you could please provide a registration or VIN number, we will be able to assist you further.

      Thanks.

      1. Thank you, Syed.

We can confirm that the pollen filter needs to be replaced every 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. The air filter should be inspected every 20,000 miles or 2 years and replaced every 40,000 miles or 4 years.

        We hope this helps. Thanks.

  3. Hi my reg is BJ16PRZ, I service this car every year in a Toyota garage, did they change the cabin air filter or do I have to request this separately? Second question, when set on recirculation, is the recirculated air filtered or is it only outside air that is filtered when it enters the cabin? thanks!

    1. Hi Yannick,
      Thanks for your comment.
The cabin air filter is inspected in every service and replaced in every second service due to the alternation between intermediate and full servicing.
Your Toyota centre will be able to advise which service type was carried out.
Regarding air circulation, it is only the outside air that is filtered when it enters the cabin.
      Thanks.

  5. Hi, my Aygo’s reg is HY10 PYJ. Can you confirm if it has a pollen filter please? If so, how effective is the filter? I’ve recently had seasonal allergies worsen but would love to drive without a pollen mask.

    1. Hi Rebecca,

Your vehicle is fitted with a cabin filter. Without knowing exactly what one is fitted, or when it was last replaced, it is hard for us to say. Any filter in any application will naturally get clogged up over time, so it may be time to replace. There are a range of cabin filters available, some are more expensive and more effective. Your nearest Toyota centre will be able to order and fit one for you.

      Thanks
