Toyota Avensis review

The Toyota Avensis is a large family car, available in both saloon and estate car body styles.

It offers drivers the choice of four engines, including 1.8-litre petrol and 2.0 and 2.2-litre diesels. All models are generously equipped. There are four different trim levels to choose between, including Active, Icon, Icon Business Edition and Excel.

Toyota is proud that the Avensis is built in Britain, and with 17 models in the range, believes that there is an Avensis for you. The diesel models are particularly efficient, with the 2.0-litre D-4D diesel model returning 62.8mpg.

DRIVING
Buyers of the Toyota Avensis saloon can choose from four economical engines, with one petrol and three diesel versions offered. There is also a wide range of transmissions on offer, including a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic and seven-speed stepped CVT. Toyota’s engine technology, called Toyota Optimal Drive, ensures good performance and excellent fuel economy along with low emissions for the environmentally-conscious buyer.

The Toyota Avensis saloon rides and handles superbly for a car of its size. The latest version, launched in 2013, features improvements to the suspension and power steering that deliver better ride comfort and handling responses. On the road, the 2.2-litre D-CAT offers the strongest performance, offering 148bhp and a 0-62mph sprint time of 8.9 seconds.

COMFORT
The inside of the Toyota Avensis saloon is quiet and comfortable, a peaceful environment thanks to excellent sound insulation keeping out unwanted engine and road noise. Four trim levels – Active, Icon, Icon Business Edition and Excel – are all well-equipped, with the latest Toyota Touch 2 with Go multimedia and navigation systems included as standard on Icon and Icon Business Edition models (Touch 2 with Go Plus on Excel models).

Every Toyota Avensis is roomy inside with plenty of head- and legroom and uses high-quality materials that are pleasing to look at and to touch. A boot liner is offered as part of an optional protection pack that also includes rear parking sensors.

PRACTICALITY
The Toyota Avensis saloon is a large car ideal for family and business use. A large boot opening provides access to 509 litres of boot space, and the rear seat also folds forward to make space for longer items to be transported. The passenger compartment also has extra cubby holes and storage spaces for even more practicality in everyday use.

SAFETY
Both the Toyota Avensis saloon and Toyota Avensis Tourer estate scored the maximum five-star rating in the 2009 Euro NCAP safety crash tests, so you can be assured that its strong body and numerous airbags will protect occupants in the event of an accident. To help avoid that happening, the Toyota Avensis is also fitted with safety aids like anti-lock brakes, steering assist, stability control, traction control and brake assist as standard.

As an option on Excel models, a Pre-Crash Safety System uses radar and cameras to monitor the road for potential collisions and activate avoidance systems. All Toyota Avensis models have follow-me-home headlights that stay illuminated for 30 seconds to light your path home, keeping you safe even after you have left the vehicle.

RUNNING COSTS*
With its sleek, aerodynamic design and efficient petrol and diesel engines, running costs for the Toyota Avensis saloon are kept to a minimum. The low-emission engines mean that road tax rates start from £0 per year for the most popular 2.0 D-4D diesel, and at most will cost £290 each year (2.2 D-CAT 150 diesel).

Impressive fuel economy ranges from 43.5mpg (1.8 Valvematic petrol) to 62.8mpg (2.0 D-4D diesel) on the combined cycle, and as it only needs a service every 10,000 miles or once a year, the Toyota Avensis saloon is affordable to maintain.

QUALITY
The Toyota Avensis is built in Derbyshire at the same state-of-the-art factory that makes the Toyota Auris and Toyota Auris Touring Sports. A comprehensive five-year/100,000 mile mechanical warranty reflects Toyota’s renowned build quality and reliability. The Toyota Avensis also has three years’ cover against rust and paint defects and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty for complete peace of mind.

The 1.8 Valvematic petrol engine is available in all trim levels from Active to Icon Business Edition, ranging from £17,700 to £20,500 for the six-speed manual models, or an extra £1050 for the optional Multidrive S automatic transmission. 1. Hi i have avensis 1.8 petrol. I do engine service on every almost 9000 miles but this car isn’t giving the good mileage. Mileage range is decreasing every month. I am using engine oil from Toyota dealers and Fuel always from Shall station. When i bought this car clock shows 418 mileage range with full tank now its comes to 333 range. Anybody can give me suggestions on it.

    1. Hi Ateeq, thanks for getting in touch. Mileage range can vary depending on a variety of things including driving style and driving conditions. In colder weather, for example, it takes longer for an engine to warm up meaning more fuel is used. You may see your range increase over the summer months, however we recommend you visit your local dealer and explain your issue to them, as they will be able to investigate further.

    2. Hi i have a toyota avensis active 2013 that does not have a sat nav or dab radio. The radio/part it currently has is 53872. Can you quote me to have a dabband sat nav fitted please thank you.–
      Thanks Christopher

  2. Hi David,
Thanks for your query. After speaking with the product team we can advise that the Avensis has a rear-view camera which is shown on the Toyota touch screen, however this is only standard on certain grades. If you know your specific vehicle grade we can help further. Hope this helps.

  3. Hello please can you help me out here am planing to buy Toyota Avensis 2.2L Diesel, I want to know about fuel consumption of it please, as I will be using it for mini cab

    1. Hi Ade,
Thanks for getting in touch. We are unable to say exactly what the fuel consumption of this vehicle may be. We can however advise the following steps to better your fuel consumption:
      1. Clear out the boot! Keeping the boot free of unnecessary weight will give your car and immediate boost in performance and economy.
      2. Check your tyre pressures – dig out your owner’s manual, and do a weekly check to ensure that your tyres are correctly inflated in line with Toyota’s recommendation.
      3. Think ahead – by planning your journeys, you can avoid traffic jams and minimise the likelihood of getting lost.
      4. Shut up! Closing the windows and sun roof at speeds above 45mph will reduce drag, reducing fuel consumption.
      5. Remove unused roof racks, boxes and bike racks – they’re a real drag too!
      6. Steady as she goes – maintain a steady speed and don’t go over the speed limit.
      7. Smoothly does it! Try to avoid sudden braking or acceleration.
      We hope this helps.

  4. Hi, can you help. Ive an Toyota Avensis Tourer T Sprit D CAT with 2.2 diesel engine. After a regular routine service yesterday a Main Dealership, i was informed I’m showing the first stages of a failed head gasket! To say i was shocked was an understatement, when told it would probably need a new engine. The car is the 2010 model and always maintained regularly, now with 110,000 miles on the clock. Do you know of any problems with this engine, as the Technician suggested there has been, but as I’ve done over 100k nothing they could do! I welcome any comments you may have.

      1. Hi, thanks for your reply, but, I’ve contacted the Customer Relations department & conveyed my dissapointment with my so called Toyota quality engine, which nowadays 110k on a well maintained engine is nothing. Customer Relations said I’d done everything I should & could have done, and my local dealership has called to tell me, that Toyota GB have given them the OK to offer me a discount on a new engine, but even with this will still cost many thousands of pounds!!

Great! I’m a three car Toyota household, but after being persuaded to leave my trusted Volvo brand, was told by a Toyota Salesman in 2011, that Toyota and its quality brand & workmanship was far better, unfortunately, I never had one engine fail after only 110k miles.

I will have to put this down to experience, so it looks like I’ll change brands, as I’m very unhappy & dissapointed with Toyota, with a modern engine needing replacing after 110k. So buyer beware.

        David

      2. I am 300,000 km on the clock in the service in a 2002 toyota engine and have recorded no dissapointment. work with experts and you will not regret having a TOYOTA.

      3. Hi CB,
        Thanks for your kind words!
We’re glad to hear that your Toyota is still serving you well, and we wish you many more happy miles.
        Thanks.

  5. Hello, I drive a 2012 avensis 1.8 petrol I have this constant warning sign that pops up about the VSC sysytem service. I think it hampers the acceleration and fuel economy. I drive in Lagos, Nigeria. Any ideas of the likely cause or how I can deal with this. Thanks

    1. Hi Nnadozie,
Thanks for getting in touch. We’d advise contacting Toyota in your region as they’d be in the best position to assist. Thanks.

  6. Hello. I am interested in buying Toyota Avensis 2.0 TD Icon Saloon 4D 2014 and I would like to know if it affects the engine in any way, the fact that I drive short distances (1, 2 miles). Consumption can increase considerably or can be any other issues that can appear? Thank you.
