Toyota warranty – how it works

Every Toyota in the UK, old or new, purchased outside of or in a Toyota dealer, is eligible to be covered up to ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) of Toyota warranty. This is provided through an initial three-year manufacturer warranty followed by up to seven years of service-activated warranty. Terms and conditions apply and can be read here

For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Toyota warranty

The combination of manufacturer warranty and service-activated warranty means Toyota owners can access Toyota warranty of up to 10 years (or 100,000 miles), giving them a chance to relax in the knowledge that they and their vehicle are in safe hands.

The warranty applies to every type of powertrain, from market-leading hybrids and conventional petrol and diesel models to advanced new battery electric vehicles.

Here we answer key questions about the Toyota warranty programme. If you require further information, please let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer your queries.

How do I get the Toyota warranty?

From 1 June 2021, all new Toyota vehicles have been sold with a three-year (or 60,000-mile) manufacturer warranty as standard. Following that initial period, Toyota provides a 12-month (or 10,000-mile) warranty with every qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, for up to an additional seven years.

There are no complex formalities. The Toyota warranty is automatically activated on the completion of a scheduled full or interim qualifying service at an official Toyota centre. By keeping to their vehicle’s service schedule, customers can benefit from an extra 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, year after year, until the ten year or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

How does the Toyota warranty work?

The warranty operates in the same way as the warranties provided on new and approved used Toyota vehicles. Cover is automatic when the vehicle undergoes a scheduled full or interim qualifying service and effective from that date for 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is soonest. On vehicles that have service intervals every two years, the cover is for 24 months or 20,000 miles.

There are no forms to sign to obtain the warranty cover and the customer does not have to keep or present any policy documents should they need to make a claim. The warranty status of their vehicle is recorded in the details of their vehicle held by the Toyota network and is noted on the service invoice raised by the centre.

Approved vehicle parts

This central record means that a vehicle’s warranty will be recognised at any official Toyota centre, should customers move or choose to have their car serviced at a different approved location.

Following completion of a service where their vehicle qualifies for the warranty, customers will be sent a confirmation email by their centre (subject to them providing an email address for contact).

If a vehicle requires work to be done under warranty, the customer contacts their local Toyota centre in the first instance. They will be able to confirm the warranty status on receiving details of the vehicle.

Which cars are eligible for the new Toyota warranty?

It’s a comprehensive programme that applies to all Toyota passenger cars, Toyota Professional light commercial vans and pick-ups and the latest Toyota GR performance models.

Likewise, there are no exclusions where powertrains are concerned, with the same level of cover provided for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles and the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell saloon, as well as for models with petrol and diesel internal combustion engines.

Eligible vehicles range from cars just completing the period of their new vehicle warranty, to high-mileage models that have passed through multiple ownerships and have no prior Toyota service history.

What’s covered and what’s not covered?

This new Toyota warranty covers the same parts and labour as the three-year manufacturer’s warranty provided on new Toyota vehicles and the one-year manufacturer warranty that’s standard with approved used vehicles.

It does not include wear and tear items, bodywork, paint, interior trims and maintenance parts. A vehicle health check is part of the service package, which includes all mechanical and electronic parts, which helps potential problems to be detected at an early stage. Any existing defects present at the time of service are excluded from the warranty.

Full terms and conditions can be downloaded from toyota.co.uk

Although the warranty cover is uniform, different types of vehicle owner will have a different customer experience:

New Toyota vehicles

Customers with new Toyota vehicles will have a three-year/60,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty in place, or, for Toyotas ordered prior to 1 June 2021, a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have a qualifying service at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

For vehicles with a two-year service schedule, a 24-month/20,000-mile warranty will automatically be activated. The warranty will then be renewed at each successive qualifying service at an official Toyota centre, until the ten years or 100,000-mile limit is reached.

Approved used Toyota vehicles

Customers with approved used vehicles purchased from the Toyota network will have a 12-month warranty with unlimited mileage, plus one year’s AA roadside assistance cover providing breakdown and recovery services at the customer’s home or roadside.

After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Used Toyota vehicles

Customers with used vehicles purchased outside the Toyota network can still enjoy the same benefit. Cars registered prior to 1 June 2021 came with a five-year manufacturer warranty. Cars registered after 1 June 2021 carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit.

‘Lapsed’ and new customers

Lapsed and new customers who have previously chosen to have their vehicle serviced outside the Toyota network can also take advantage of the warranty. There is no requirement for a vehicle to have a history of servicing at an official centre in order to qualify for the warranty; it will be applied from the date the vehicle undergoes a qualifying service at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota customers with service plans

Customers who have a service plan for their vehicle face no additional costs or changes to the terms of their plan. The warranty will be an additional, added-value benefit when they next undergo a qualifying service .

Toyota warranty and hybrid vehicles

For customers with hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Health Check forms part of the scheduled servicing. The warranty includes cover for the hybrid battery and components for up to 10 years/100,000 miles. After this time, customers can still extend the cover for up to 15 years with a stand-alone scheduled Hybrid Health Check.

I have purchased a vehicle with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When does it become eligible for the Toyota warranty?

Vehicles purchased on or after 1 June 2021 are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for three years. The additional warranty benefit can be enjoyed following a qualifying service when the warranty expires, by having the car serviced at an approved Toyota centre.

Toyota servicing

I have a three-year-old Toyota with an active five-year warranty. Will the Toyota warranty affect this cover?

Vehicles purchased on or after 1 June 2021 are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for three years. The additional warranty benefit can be enjoyed following a qualifying service when the warranty expires, by having the car serviced at an approved Toyota centre.

I recently purchased a used car from a Toyota centre. When will it be eligible for the Toyota warranty?

Used cars purchased through the centre network are covered by a 12 months/unlimited mileage warranty. Toyota warranty benefits can be enjoyed when the car is brought in for its next scheduled service.

I already have an extended warranty. Can I swap onto this warranty you’re describing here?

Yes, you can cancel a Toyota extended warranty policy and receive a pro-rata refund, provided you haven’t made a claim. Once that is cancelled, you’ll then need to have a qualifying service to activate the new warranty. It may be better to wait until your next service is due! If you purchased an extended warranty through a Toyota centre, the terms and conditions for cancellation may be different.

Can I purchase the Toyota warranty?

No, the warranty is automatically activated following the completion of a full or interim service.

Does the warranty apply to light commercial vehicles and business vehicles?

Yes, it applies to all Toyota vehicles.

Is a Hybrid Health Check still available to extend my Toyota vehicle’s hybrid battery cover?

The Hybrid Health Check is included as part of the service on vehicles less than 10 years old or having less than 100,000 miles on the clock. When a Toyota warranty contract is activated, it will include the hybrid battery cover. When the vehicle is no longer eligible for the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, extended warranty cover on the hybrid battery and components can be accessed through a stand-alone Hybrid Health Check, up to the vehicle reaching 15 years from the date of first registration.

My vehicle’s service schedule is every two years? How does this affect the warranty?

Where scheduled maintenance is every two years, a warranty contract will automatically be activated and cover the vehicle for two years/20,000 miles until the next qualifying service is due.

Will I receive confirmation that my vehicle is covered by the Toyota warranty?

Centres will advise customers if their vehicle is eligible for the Toyota warranty. When a qualifying service has been completed and the warranty contract has been active, customers will receive a follow-up email. Further questions arising can be answered by the centre which looks after your vehicle.

Does the introduction of the Toyota warranty affect the service plan I’ve purchased for my vehicle?

Customers with a service plan now get more for their money when their vehicle is eligible for a warranty, receiving an extra year’s warranty for their vehicle when it undergoes a qualifying service, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

If my vehicle is nine years and 364 days old on the day of service, will a Toyota warranty contract be activated and will it expire the next day?

A full contract will be activated every time an eligible vehicle undergoes a qualifying service. In this example the vehicle will be covered until one day before the 11th anniversary of its first date of registration.

Can I transfer the Toyota warranty to a new owner if I sell my vehicle?

If a vehicle is sold, the new owner inherits the benefits and can continue to extend the warranty by maintaining it at a Toyota centre. The warranty cover applies only to the serviced vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

Will the Toyota warranty cover expire if I am late booking my vehicle’s next service?

The vehicle must be serviced before the warranty expires to activate a new contract and maintain the cover. Local centres can provide further advice and help book your next qualifying service.

I own a GR Yaris with a GR Yaris Track Warranty. If I drive my car on track, will this affect my Toyota warranty cover?

Driving the GR Yaris on track would not invalidate the warranty, but terms and conditions still apply. The vehicle can be covered by both the track and Toyota warranties.

The warranty cover on my approved used Toyota includes one year’s AA roadside assistance cover. Is this available with the Toyota warranty?

Roadside cover is not included in the Toyota or Lexus warranty but can be purchased separately if required. The warranty is exceptional value, being provided at no extra cost to the customer beyond the menu pricing of their vehicle’s service.

Are there other benefits to using Toyota centres?

In addition to the warranty, servicing at a Toyota centre provides other significant benefits to customers. Work is carried out by qualified Toyota technicians, using Toyota-approved parts to ensure optimum performance.

Workshop teams are fully equipped and trained work on all the technologies featured in Toyota vehicles, including electrified powertrains and advanced handling and safety systems. Pricing is transparent with a service menu price guarantee for the scheduled servicing requirements for each model.

Toyota customer-focused approach includes an online service booking facility at the customer’s preferred centre. Centres will also make servicing as convenient as possible, with collection and delivery, courtesy cars and while-you-wait servicing options.

  1. I bought a used approved RAV4 Hybrid (FY69 XVL) from FRF Toyota in Swansea in Jan 2024. The car was apparently fully checked and serviced as part of my purchase. I had to call Toyota Roadside Assistance a few days ago because my car wouldn’t start (AA Job Number 1357). The AA mechanic that attended ran several diagnostic tests. He concluded that the 12V battery in the boot needs replacing. He explained that he regularly encounters problems with Toyota 12V batteries, especially in hybrid vehicles. The battery fitted only has 285 Amps, whereas it should probably have double that for a vehicle like the RAV4.

I am writing to clarify the Toyota Warranty Terms and Conditions that can be found here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/content/dam/toyota/nmsc/united-kingdom/owners/warranty/toyota-warranty/toyota-warranty-ts-and-cs-june-2022.pdf

Paragraph 3 suggests that the “Approved Used Warranty” is distinct from the “Additional Warranty”. It indicates that the former is provided for 12 months from the point of sale by Assurant General Insurance Limited. In contrast, the “Additional Warranty” is defined in Paragraph 6 as directly related to annual servicing at an authorised Toyota Dealer.

Paragraph 13A clearly explains that the 12V battery is excluded from the “Additional Warranty” however this refers explicitly to the “Additional Warranty”. I cannot find a list of inclusions and exclusions for the “Approved Used Warranty”.

After paying over 20K for a used approved vehicle – specifically designed to provide peace of mind – it doesn’t feel right to have to pay for a new battery after only 5 months of ownership, especially considering that Toyota have likely used a battery with insufficient Amps in the first place.

Furthermore, it is frustrating that the Warranty Terms and Conditions are not clear. They define several different types of warranty, yet only provide detailed information for the additional warranty. If the “Additional Warranty” is distinct from the “Manufacturer’s Warranty” and the “Used Approved Warranty”, surely the Terms and Conditions need to specify what is included/excluded from these warranties.

I would like an explanation of exactly what is covered by the “Used Approved Warranty”. I would also like to know if Toyota has taken action to rectify the common problem with 12V batteries in their hybrid vehicles.

    1. Hi Louis, thanks for getting in touch.

Full T&C’s of all warranties can be found here: https://brnw.ch/21wKIzF. We are not able to advise further on whether an element is covered, your local Toyota Centre will carry out an investigation to establish whether the issue is deemed as a result of a defect coverable under the warranty.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  2. Hello there,

I am the owner of a 2020 Toyota C-HR, which I purchased from Arnold Clark in 2023. My vehicle is approaching its next service date, and I wish to clarify some details regarding the manufacturer’s warranty.

As per the information provided, Toyota offers a 5-year service warranty on the C-HR model, with the possibility of extending this warranty by an additional year for each annual service completed at a Toyota dealership. I have also purchased a 2-year MOT and service plan from Arnold Clark.

My query is regarding the compatibility of the Arnold Clark service with the Toyota service warranty. I would like to know if servicing my Toyota C-HR at an Arnold Clark branch have any impact on the validity of the manufacturer’s warranty.

Arnold Clark has assured me that their services are carried out to the manufacturer’s specifications and should not affect the warranty. However, for peace of mind, I seek confirmation from Toyota directly.

    Kind regards

    1. Hi Binny, thanks for getting in touch.

You are welcome to service your vehicle whereever you wish. The initial manufacturing warranty will remain provided genuine Toyota parts are used and the service schedule is adhered to.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  3. Hi there,

Apologies as I’m sure this must have been answered already, but some of the information about how to maintain the additional warranty when purchased as a used car seems seems a little unclear.

I’m due to pick up a used 2019 Rav 4 from a non-Toyota dealer. The car was registered on 29th June 2019 so will shortly be reaching the end of its 5 year manufacturer warranty. It’s done 28000 miles and has been serviced by Toyota up until the non-Toyota dealer took it as part exchange, however the dealer has now serviced it (to prep for sale) but this service was non Toyota and technically 2 months late on the service schedule. Would it still qualify for additional warranty if I now took it to Toyota to service?

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Ben, thanks for getting in touch.

No need to apologise, we appreciate that it can be a little confusing. Essentially, you don’t need to worry about previous history. If you take it down to a Toyota Centre for a service, it’ll be allocated 12 months/10,000 miles of warranty from that day.

Hope you enjoy your new RAV4!

  4. Is there anywhere I can find a list of official Toyota centre for service in Scotland? is that the same as “FIND YOUR NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER” or are there service centres elsewhere ?

  5. My car is 2016 Rav 4 and is approved used car bought from 2023 July, when I did the MOT on mid June, MOT fail because Suspension arm pin ir bush excessively worn and brake disc worn, I see the T & C, there are mention warranty can cover suspension and brake disc, why I still need to paid for repair?

    1. Hi Danny, thanks for getting in touch.

All warranty claims must be investigated on an individual basis to establish whether the cause of the fault is due to part failure or wear and tear. These parts generally fail due to expected wear and tear.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  6. OK, I bought a 2018 avensis estate in 2021, it had a five year warranty, and I’ve serviced it with Toyota ever since, its currently ~51,000 miles.

Had it serviced and MoTd again at Toyota today, and was informed the corrosion that appeared this year at the centre of one of the alloy wheels is not covered by warranty.

    Is this correct?

    1. Hi Wayne, thanks for getting in touch.

We’re sorry to hear that your Avensis is under the weather. We’re not able to advise on faults via social media, your local Toyota Centre is best placed to assist with this. If you disagree with their verdict, you are welcome to seek a second opinion.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  7. Can you tell me if the TPMS tyre pressure sensors on my 2019 chr are covered under the 10 year Toyota warranty please?
All my tyres are the correct pressure and the light has been reset within the dashboard settings but it’s still illuminated. So looks like one needs replacing.

    1. Hi Marie Ann, thanks for getting in touch.

This would be something that your local Toyota Centre will need to take a look at. They will investigate to establish exactly what is going wrong and what the cause is.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  8. Hello, I am currently looking to source a Yaris GR (circuit). I almost purchased a 22′ plate (private), until a warranty query raised it’s head. Essentially, vehicle has FTSH but the last service carried out was around 2 months late. I visited my local dealer to query the ‘lapse’ in servicing. I was told that the warranty was void due to the short delay. I passed on the purchase due to this advice. I have enquired about many vehicles since, very few are ‘date perfect’. So, with regard to the initial 3 year warranty, do the service schedules have to be perfect, timing wise? Secondly, it appears that moving into the 10 year/100k phase, this is awarded with every qualifying service, annually/10K at a time? Does this become active regardless of maintenance in years 1-3? I am looking for a ‘date perfect’ example, but want to understand the warranty, as this is very important to my ownership.

    1. Hi Scott,
Thank you very much for your interest in the GR Yaris!
Our Warranty Team have advised that the warranty is not totally void, however if the operation or irregular / missed servicing of a vehicle is the result of the failure, then we may not support the particular repair during the warranty period.
You are correct, the service activated warranty starts from the initial qualifying service, so previous history will not impact, however the repairer will highlight any major defects and repairs required prior to completing the first qualifying service.
If however, the vehicle is genuine and no defects are found the previous history will not affect and you will have a one year warranty or 10K miles from the date of service, which ever comes first.
Warranty is then applicable up to ten years or 100K miles, again, whichever comes first.
The only advice we have is to ensure continuous warranty and have your vehicle serviced BEFORE the one year or 10K miles limits from the service date.
We hope this information is useful.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
      Thank you.

  9. Hello, from reading some of the replies from Toyota from the question asked here it seems that any warranty claim is subject to the review of the “local Toyota Centre” and it is at their discretion if repairs would be covered under warranty or not.

How does Toyota ensure warranty claims are assessed consistency across the Toyota Centre network?

In addition, is it not in the interest of Toyota and the Toyota Centre to find that the issues identified fall outside of the warranty and require the customer to pay?

    1. Hi Frank, thanks for your comment.

All issues must be investigated to establish the cause of the fault. If a manufacturing error is found to be the cause, it may be covered under the warranty, if it is regular wear and tear it will not. Further information including the T&C’s can be found here: https://brnw.ch/21wLW50

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK

  10. I’m looking to buy a 2020/2021/2022 Toyota Proace EV with under 100k miles. I was just wondering if the vehicle will still be covered by warranty, even if it has missed 1 or 2 services? Thanks

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for your comment.

Whilst a missed service does not automatically invalidate the warranty, if an issue occurs that is a result of a missed service, it will not be covered under the manufacturing warranty.

      Thanks,

      Toyota UK
