Dynamic performance. Comfort. Emissions. Fuel economy. Cost of ownership. So many aspects of the new Toyota Avensis have been improved, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a new car entirely. One thing’s for sure, though: Avensis certainly makes an impression.
Revised 2.0 D-4D engine
The 124bhp Toyota Optimal Drive 2.0-litre D-4D engine has undergone a number of changes. A new turbocharger, adjusted torque characteristics, improved cooling and lubrication and changes to the diesel particulate filter all combine to improve combined cycle fuel economy by 15 per cent (from 53.3 to 61.4mpg) and reduce CO2 emissions by 14 per cent (139 to 119g/km). The engine is 3kg lighter, and quieter too.
Also available are the 1.8 Valvematic petrol engine with manual or Multidrive S continuously variable transmission and the 2.2-litre D-4D and D-CAT diesel engines – the latter with six-speed automatic transmission.
Ride, handling and comfort
The development team behind new Avensis aimed specifically to improve comfort levels and deliver a more rewarding drive. This has been achieved through a more rigid body, adjustments to the front and rear suspension and improved aerodynamics, while the electric power steering adopts a quicker gear ratio give direct response and agility.
The focus on comfort extends to the interior, where extra insulation material reduces in-cabin NVH levels, and the front seats offer better lateral support.
Improved total ownership costs
New Avensis delivers a 17 per cent Benefit-in-Kind tax rating, giving significant savings for company car buyers in comparison to rival models – not to mention the previous Avensis model.
And it represents great value thanks to its feature-laden spec, with the Toyota Touch & Go system included as standard (TR, T4, T Spirit grades). Add in improved residual values and costs for servicing, maintenance and repair, and you can expect to save £2,000 over three years with new Avensis.
The new Toyota Avensis is produced in the UK at Toyota’s Burnaston factory, which was recently visited by Prime Minister David Cameron. It is on sale now, priced from £18,450 on the road.
