Meet Hybrid: your questions about hybrid vehicles answered

Toyota dealers are inviting anyone with questions about hybrid cars to a nationwide ‘Meet Hybrid’ event later this month.

This free event runs from 22-24 February (or 21-23 February in Northern Ireland). Curious car-buyers can pop in to their local dealer and meet our range of petrol-electric hybrids, including the all-new Toyota Corolla.

Then they can find answers to questions about anything related to the hybrid cars, including technology, reliability, cost of ownership and practicality.

Answers to questions about hybrid will be supplied by specific windscreen stickers, information plinths or via the dealer staff.

Representatives will be on hand to continue the hybrid conversation and arrange test drives. They will also demonstrate the new Toyota Hybrid augmented reality application, which uses clever graphics to show customers how the Toyota C-HR’s hybrid system operates.

For starters, here’s an idea of the sort of questions that could be asked and answered during the Meet Hybrid event:

What is a Toyota Hybrid?

Toyota Hybrids switch seamlessly between two power sources. Sometimes they travel using the petrol engine. Sometimes they travel using their self-charging electric battery. And sometimes they travel using both at the same time.

Are Toyota Hybrids fuel efficient?

Yes, Toyota Hybrids are very economical. With the hybrid powertrain and ability to switch seamlessly between the petrol engine and electric battery, any fuel you put in goes further.

Are Toyota Hybrids reliable?

We’ve been perfecting our hybrid know-how for more than 20 years. Batteries are covered by a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty from new. In fact, we’re so confident in our technology that the warranty on our hybrid batteries can be extended up to 15 years by having an annual Hybrid Electric Service.

Are hybrids okay for motorway driving?

They’re better than just okay. Sometimes, when you need an extra boost of power, the electric motor kicks in to provide instant acceleration, which is always useful when overtaking long vehicles at motorway speeds.

We think the best way to get to know a hybrid is to meet one. So if you’re curious, come along to the open weekend to find out more about the innovative technology.

      1. I need to understand how globlal extended warranty for Hybrid Baterries works. My Prius C 2013 is 6 year old batery with 75000 kilometes and It failed. Toyota said they covered only 5 years battery warranty, but in other. Counties it covers up to 8 years or 100 000 miles ? This is so frustrated! Why there is such different baterry disclaimer among countries , it should be global warranty !

      2. Hi Wendy,

Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately, we are only able to comment on cars in the UK market, we would therefore recommend that you contact Toyota in your local region.

        Thanks.

  1. What will happen if the gasoline goes empty and did nt notice.can the car be taken to next fuel station to fill. Will the car start without fuel.

    1. Hi Vipin,

Thanks for getting in touch. Toyota petrol-electric hybrids know no limits when it comes to driving range. The hybrid battery is automatically recharged as the vehicle is driven, including the capture and conversion of energy into electricity every time the car slows down or brakes. That means there is no need to plug in the vehicle for recharging, or any limit to journey distances. The only stop required is a few minutes to refuel the tank.

      Thanks.

      1. As far as I know, the answer is no. I believe that a sensor looks for the level of fuel in the tank. If there is no fuel, the car won’t work.

  2. Hi William,

Thanks for getting in touch. Although we don’t have any information regarding a full EV just yet, we are working on our own range of EV’s and will bring them to market once we feel the time is right and the correct infrastructure is available. Toyota has announced plans for electrification across the entire Toyota line-up by 2025. You can see more here: https://mag.toyota.co.uk/electrification-across-entire-toyota-line-up-from-2025.

    Thanks.

  3. Hi please can you clarify if the 15 year hybrid/HV battery warranty now applies regardless of when the relevant vehicle was bought? I had thought the hybrid battery warranty on my 2018 RAV4 (VINJTMDJREV20D200006) was for 10 years so long as it underwent the annual hybrid battery check but will be even more pleased if it is now longer! Many thanks

  4. Hello there,

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, this is correct. The vehicle is able to have up to 15 years of coverage as long as the hybrid health checks were carried out, and this covers the hybrid battery for 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.

    We hope this helps.

  5. With hybrid cars being the talk of the town, this was a much needed read. Thank you for this informative post. It has helped to completely understand the true benefits that arise from driving Hybrid cars. Truly a wonderful merger of advanced technology and transport.

  6. Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for getting in touch and for these kind words. We are thrilled to hear that you have gained an understanding of Hybrid technology.

Are there any Hybrid vehicles in particular that you are interested in?

  7. After purchasing my first Toyota 6 years ago I have really became invested in the brand. My current petrol Yaris will be 3 in December and I have been considering a hybrid but am put off by the huge price tag on the CH4 which is my dream car.

I am also desperate to make the leap to full EV but am put off by the ridiculous cost of such vehicles (even with the government grant) and the range.

So after reading your blog at https://mag.toyota.co.uk/electrification-across-entire-toyota-line-up-from-2025 which is from 2017 – I would like to know where Toyota is at with bringing a car to the market with a battery range of at least 250 miles per charge?

Also, what is the benefits of hybrid now factoring in price tag, running costs etc?

    1. Hi Anthony,

Thanks for getting in touch. It’s great to hear that you’re interested in Hybrid technology. Toyota Hybrids can use electric power to pull away and even cruise at speeds up to 31 mph. As a result, you can get zero fuel consumption, zero tailpipe emissions and a near-silent drive for up to 50% of your urban journeys according to Toyota Hybrid Experience figures. Meanwhile, UK government data shows that hybrid cars have consistently lower CO2 figures than conventional cars. Learn more about this here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/hybrid/.

      Thanks.

  8. I have recently purchased a Yaris Hybrid (my 14th Toyota since 1978!). The Toyota Yaris handbook supplied with this car makes no reference to the hybrid version – have I the cxrrect handbook?
Also, what is the “B” setting on the gear selector? (the rearmost one)? Something to do with braking?
The section on auto gear selectors mentioned in my handbook makes no reference to this setting

    1. Hi Peter,

Thanks for getting in touch. It’s great to hear you’re driving a Yaris Hybrid, and that you have been enjoying our cars for so long – 14 is amazing!

Regarding your questions if you could please provide us with the reg, we’d be happy to look into this for you.

      Thanks.

      1. Hello and thanks – reg. no. is now T9PGW (formrley CV64BTY) Hope this helps1 Geoff Wright

      2. Hi Peter,

Thanks for your patience. We’ve looked into this with our team and regarding the B mode, this essentially simulates engine braking. You will be able to view a detailed explanation of this using an online copy of the owner’s manual which you can find via this link: https://www.toyota.co.uk/tme#/my-toyota/eManual

In reference to your handbook, you may indeed have the incorrect one. Are you able to provide any part numbers of reference numbers from the back page and we can check?

        Thanks.

      3. Thanks for your e-mail. The info. from the back cover of my handbook is:-
        Publication number = OM52C71E
        Part number = 01999-52C71
        Hope this proves useful,
        Peter Wright

      4. Hi Peter,

Thank you for sending this. We have now checked it with our team and have emailed you in order to resolve this for you.

        Thanks.
