Safety and equipment features of the all-new Yaris

The all-new Yaris takes small car safety to an unprecedented level and has been equipped to be the safest model in its segment. Key strengths include a significant increase in body rigidity and a two-generation leap forward in Toyota Safety Sense systems. In addition, a number of new features are making their Toyota debut, reaffirming our commitment to ensuring the highest safety provisions are as widely available as possible.

Watch the video above as safety expert Tom Rycken, a manager at Toyota Europe, explains some of the challenges involved in making a small car a safe car.

Safety features

Building the all-new Yaris on the GA-B platform has increased the car’s torsional rigidity to a class-best standard. This added strength provides better impact absorption and helps to maintain the integrity of the passenger cabin in the event of a collision. But if an accident did occur, the Yaris is the first Toyota to be equipped with centre air bags. These are programmed to deploy in the event of a side impact to help prevent the driver and front seat passenger from colliding with each other.

The new Yaris is also equipped with some of the most advanced driver assistance systems. There are not only more features in its Toyota Safety Sense package than any other Toyota model, but more more electronic safety features than any other B-segment competitor. Some of the highlights of this package are listed below:

  • Pre-Collision System: this integrated camera and radar set-up can detect and warn the driver about pedestrians and cyclists in the path of the car
  • Intersection Turn Assistance: this system detects potential hazards approaching the car at junctions and can apply automatic emergency braking to avoid a potential collision
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: when activated, this maintains a safe distance from the preceding vehicle and will bring the Yaris to a halt if that vehicle stops
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Control and Lane Trace Assist: these systems warn the driver if they are veering off a safe path and can also be set to automatically centre the Yaris in its lane or follow the path of the vehicle ahead if road markings are undetectable
  • Emergency Steering Assist: this system provides additional steering torque if it is necessary for the driver to swerve to avoid a pedestrian or obstacle in the car’s traffic lane, yet it also supports the driver by maintaining vehicle stability
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Monitor: these systems detect potential impact hazards during reversing manoeuvres and will alert the driver to vehicles approaching from behind on the road
  • Intelligent Clearance Sonar with automatic braking: ultrasonic sensors at the rear of the car will detect an object that is about to be hit, and will automatically apply the brakes if the driver fails to react to audible warnings

Equipment features

The all-new Yaris is generously equipped and features specifications that are more commonly found in cars from the class above. For example, it is the only car in its class to offer the option of a ten-inch colour head-up display, which allows the driver to project key information such as vehicle speed, safety warnings, navigation support and multimedia information on to the base of the windscreen.

Wireless smartphone integration comes via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it is possible to specify an eight-speaker JBL premium audio system and ambient blue cabin lighting. Connected services can also be reached using the MyToyota app.

  1. Hi, I bought a Yaris Dynamic model, would it be possible to install front and rear parking sensors with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and how much for the fixing?

      1. If we install the rear parking sensor with an independent technician (outside Toyota dealer), will it void our warranty cover?

      2. Hi Jessie, thanks for your question.

Any damage or defects caused by modifications of the original vehicle design or the installation of certain accessories will void the warranty.

        Thanks.

  2. Hi,
Thinking about buying a Yaris EXCEL grade. One of the options is ‘Panoramic roof’. The Yaris brochure, page 43 shows that this option comes with ‘Tyre repair kit’. Does this mean, it replaces the ‘Space-saver spare wheel’?
Also, Yaris Excel comes with ‘9-inch HD Display with Toyota Smart Connect & 6 Speakers’ and ‘Navigation’ (see pages 24 & 46 of Brochure). What kind of navigation does it come with? Is it ‘Toyota Touch 2 with Go’? Again, the brochure (page 46) indicates that Excel grade could come with an ‘8″ Multimedia screen’ or a ‘9″ HD Multimedia screen with Toyota Smart Connect’. Where can I get more information (on-line) about the differences, e.g. does the 8″ Screen come with Navigation and if so what type etc.?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Siva,
      Thanks for your interest.

      In answer to your questions:
-The Panoramic Roof option has a Tyre Repair Kit instead of the Space-Saver Spare Wheel.
-The navigation system is Toyota Touch 2.
-The 8″ multimedia screen would come with Toyota Touch 2 as the navigation system.

      Hope this helps.
      Thanks.

    1. Hi Nic, thanks for your question.

Please provide your Vehicle Registration and we will look into this for you.

      Thanks.

      1. Thanks for your reply. I haven’t bought a vehicle yet. I was just looking at the brochure and it doesn’t state whether they are compatible. It would be a 2023 Yaris Design. Will it work?

      2. I don’t. But I can see in the brochure that car is compatible with roof bars. You seem to resell Thule products, so I’m assuming a Thule bar would fit?

  3. Hello just brought ex demo Toyota Yaris Hybrid GR Sport 22 plate from a Toyota dealer

But no owners manual .. telling me its all on line now?? .. and no service book

Also no jack but are ordering one

The grey box .. does this have the wheel bolts in it please? ..also missing! It has spare space saver wheel but do I have to use different nuts or can I use the wheel nuts that are on the alloy wheels??

Many thanks .. they sorting it all out next week .. but just wanted to know please before I kick off !!

    Cheers

    1. Hi Clive, congratulations on your order.

Please provide a Vehicle Registration so that we can look into this.

      Thanks.

      1. Hi Clive, thanks for your question.

None of our vehicles are fitted with trackers, however this vehicle does have ‘Find My Car’. This shows the last parked location of the vehicle, after a trip has been completed. However, this is not a live tracker.

        Hope this helps.

        Thanks.

  4. Hi,

Interesting to read the question above about retro-fitting parking sensors to a model below the Dynamic. For clarity, is it the case that an Icon or Design model CANNOT be fitted with parking sensors even by the dealer without voiding the warranty?

    1. I have contacted Toyota Romford for getting Parking Sensors fitted on my Yaris Design(2022) and they’ve stated that they don’t do this, kind of dilemma now as I need parking sensors but not sure how do I go about without voiding the warranty(if I install sensors using Non Toyota Technicians). There should be a better way to serve Toyota customers. Appreciate your assistance on this.

      1. Hi Salian, thanks for your comment.

It is not possible to retrofit this feature and we would not recommend doing so through any aftermarket provider as this may void your warranty if a related issue should arise.

        Thanks,

        Toyota UK

  5. We have a 2021 model Yaris Excel and it’s about to go on its first car ferry. Is there anything that we need to do to disable the alarm system whilst on the boat, or can we just lock the car as normal?

    1. Hi Paul,
      Thanks for your comment.
Locking the car as normal should be fine for boat journeys.
      Thanks.

      1. I’ve been on some very rough car ferry channel crossings, with car alarms going off all over, and would like to know how to disable my car alarm – or immobiliser? – to stop it going off in rough seas?
Much confusion about the alarm fitted in a 2021 Yaris Cross. The manuals only mention “alarm”, not “immobiliser”, while an early questioner here was told there is a Thatcham 2 compliant immobiliser fitted but no alarm, yet a Toyota users forum says a non Thatcham alarm is fitted! The paper manual says nothing about disabling the alarm, but the electronic manual says the alarm is not set if the door is locked with the key (rather than wifi or smart method) – but that doesn’t seem to work on my car. The Toyota dealer said to apply the door lock before getting out, then exit the car and close the door whilst holding the handle out! – that doesn’t work for me either. First car I’ve bought which is so mysterious about its alarm system!!

      2. Hi Jenny,

        We apologise for the confusion.

Please may you provide a Vehicle Registration so that we can clarify this.

        Thanks.
