Leicester primary school cookery project awarded Toyota fund

A Leicester primary school is the latest organisation to benefit from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow, receiving a grant to help maintain an innovative after-school cookery project.

Rolleston Primary School in Leicester introduced an after-school cooking club called Big Cook – Little Cook where pupils and their parents are given cookery lessons and advice on how to cook healthy meals that are easy replicate at home.

Pupils are encouraged to try new foods, tastes and textures, and also discuss where the foods are from and how they’re prepared and cooked. At the end of the class each family takes away their own meal to share at home. Initial feedback on the classes was so positive that the school wanted to extend them.

Lisa Hunt, a parent from the school and a host for Farmer & Carlisle, approached her employers to see if they could help. A £1,800 donation from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow followed, allowing the Big Cook – Little Cook project to continue until the end of the academic year.

Jonathan Carlisle from Farmer and Carlisle said: “As a father of three, I know the difficulties that come with encouraging young families to eat healthily. Therefore I was delighted to hear about Big Cook – Little Cook and straightaway wanted us to be involved.

“With the £1,700 from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow, more children and parents will have access to the project. As a result this will bring about positive changes in the local community.”

Mr Toon, headmaster at Rolleston Primary, said: “The Big Cook – Little Cook project has been a brilliant opportunity for staff to work with families to collaboratively learn about healthy eating in both a fun and educational environment. The children have worked really hard preparing the meals and have enjoyed the experience of tasting new foods.”
