2019 Toyota Camry: saloon returns to the UK

2019 Toyota Camry

The new 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid has made its European debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. It combines stylish design and superior comfort levels, with the high efficiency of Toyota’s latest generation self-charging hybrid powertrain. The shift in market focus away from diesel powertrains has paved the way for the re-introduction of the Camry in Western Europe after an absence of 14 years.

The all-new 2019 Toyota Camry is the eighth generation of a car that has won many awards and distinctions since it first went on sale in 1982. Today it is sold in more than 100 countries and has amassed more than 19 million worldwide sales. With current annual sales of more than 700,000 units, it remains the world’s best-selling D/E-segment saloon.

The all-new model builds on the core values that have historically made Camry so popular: segment-leading levels of quality, durability and reliability, quietness and ride quality. These are in addition to its head-turning new exterior and interior design, outstanding comfort and roominess, state-of-the-art powertrain technology and new-found levels of driving pleasure.

The latest generation Camry showcases the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) design and engineering philosophy. Applied to every aspect of the vehicle and its powertrain, TNGA places enthusiast-oriented ‘fun to drive’ characteristics and alluring styling on an equal footing with superlative build quality, highly efficient packaging, advanced technology and strong environmental performance.

2019 Toyota Camry: exterior design

The new Camry’s styling has a bold, distinctive appearance that seamlessly melds athletic accents and creases in the sheet metal.

The front displays a strong evolution of Toyota’s current design principles. A slim and deep upper grille emphasises the Toyota emblem and incorporates thin LED headlight clusters at its extremities. The large, trapezoidal lower grille occupies almost the full width of the bumper area, its catamaran shape emphasising the car’s wide track and purposeful stance. The lower grille features horizontal bars that add both power and prestige to the wide, low frontal styling.

In profile, the low bonnet and roofline combine with a low belt line to give the appearance of a cabin pulled downwards into the body, visually lowering the new Camry’s centre of gravity even further.

The cabin combines an extended roofline with compact side glazing that fits within the wheelbase to create a stylish, sporting appearance. The rear half of the cabin tapers inwards, tucked between broad, protruding shoulders above the rear wheel arches. Below, ‘aero’ corners flow from the all-LED rear light clusters into the bumper to further emphasise the wide, dynamic stance.

2019 Toyota Camry: interior design

The new Camry’s interior has been designed with a fusion of function, style and craftsmanship. The sensuous curves of the dashboard combine an ergonomically ideal, driver-focused cockpit with spacious, comfortable passenger accommodation. Together, the seamless component layout, fine-crafted textures and consistency in the use of materials create a high-quality cabin.

The audio system, air-conditioning control panel and eight-inch multimedia display are fully integrated into the flush, piano black surface of the centre console. The Human Machine Interface design features a trio of easy-to-read displays: a ten-inch colour head-up display, a seven-inch driver’s multi-information display, and an eight-inch centre console display incorporating the latest version of Toyota’s Touch 2 multimedia system.

The switchgear has been completely redesigned for improved functionality, appearance and tactility. Seamless texture and finish quality throughout the instrument panel epitomise the Camry’s interior precision.

Virtually every surface is finished in high-quality soft-touch padding, supple leather, elegant woodgrain mouldings or a new satin chrome trim. A new Tiger Eye ornamentation trim is available, offering a sense of depth and shine that varies with the viewing angle, in the manner of a tiger’s eye gemstone.

Fabric and leather upholstery options are available, in two colour schemes: Beige (leather), which combines a dark grey carpet and upper dashboard with two shades of beige; and Black (fabric or leather), which highlights the cabin’s new satin chrome accents.

In response to the enhanced handling agility delivered by the new GA-K platform, the front seats have been redesigned to offer high comfort and great lateral hold. Replicating the design of the front seats, rear seating is available in two formats: 60:40 split-folding seats, or 40:20:40 power reclining seats with wide headrests and a large rear seat centre armrest. The power reclining seat format is available with a touch control panel built into the front of the centre armrest, so occupants can adjust the air conditioning, audio system, and seat reclining functions.

The adoption of a new rear double wishbone suspension system reduces shock absorber incursion into the load space. Maximum luggage capacity is therefore 524 litres.

2019 Toyota Camry: powertrain

The new Camry Hybrid’s 2.5-litre self-charging hybrid electric powertrain combines fuel efficiency, low emissions and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness. It delivers 215bhp and CO2 emissions from as low as 98g/km, with combined cycle fuel consumption of only 67.3mpg.

Its four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine provides high power output with a smooth, refined operation, and boasts world-class maximum thermal efficiency of 41%. It incorporates an array of Toyota advanced technologies, including electronically adjustable dual variable valve-timing and direct fuel injection for optimal power, emissions performance and fuel efficiency.

The Toyota Hybrid System II includes new Sequential Shiftmatic technology which allows the driver to make ‘gearshifts’ that mimic the style of a quick-shifting, six-speed automatic transmission.

Driving dynamics

Camry’s all-new, TNGA-based GA-K platform is key to its greater dynamic abilities and superior ride quality. The lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell offers a substantial 30% increase in torsional rigidity over the previous model. A new, four-point engine mounting system has been designed to dramatically reduce engine vibration, while further increasing the vehicle’s overall rigidity and handling stability.

A new suspension has been designed to deliver premium ride quality that surpasses other vehicles in its class. It consists of a MacPherson strut system at the front and a new double-wishbone layout at the rear that offers superior stability and flatter cornering.

The platform is designed to give a low centre of gravity, which results in a more engaging driving position and more precise, responsive handling with less body roll. As a result, the overall vehicle and bonnet heights have been reduced and the cabin floor has been lowered.

Increased safety levels

The new Camry comes as standard with Toyota Safety Sense, a set of active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of traffic situations.

It benefits from Pre-Collision Safety with a Pedestrian Detection function, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with steering assist, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist. Further driver support and safety-enhancing systems include a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, front and rear corner clearance sonars, a parking monitor with parking guidelines, and a full suite of braking and traction control systems.

Camry’s body structure is designed to absorb impacts, dispersing collision energy to help prevent deformation of the high-strength cabin area. A new inner bonnet structure and impact-absorbing cowl structure contribute to first-class pedestrian protection.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch. We do not currently have a launch date, but please keep an eye on our blog and social channels for further updates on the 2019 Camry Hybrid.

      1. I hope there will be an Estate/Tourer to replace my excellent 7 years old Avensis Tourer.

  2. The Avensis which the Camry replaces will be an hard act to follow.Depending entirely on the plant it will be built in.Having had many Avensis always in Excel mode and made in Derby the finishers was better than a Merc at 70K.Sounds as though the Camry will sit alongside the Lexus IS for engine capacity, and smooth operation .Toyota are being careful in pricing on all UK models and those so far declared are Brexit prices. No need to worry Toyota we will not be leaving the EU and soon it will be business as usual/

    1. Oh yes we will be leaving…. democratic vote was made and we will soon be free.. get over it..

  3. Couldn’t believe Toyota stopped selling into UK when they did. I owned 2 of them, the 1st being the smaller engine and the 2nd the 3 litre V6. Fantastic car. Moved on to Lexus LS when Camry no longer available, which I kept for 12 years clocking over 200,000 comfortable miles. Sooooo pleased to hear the New Camry is coming back to UK as a Hybrid. Hoping we don’t have to wait too long before we see it in our showrooms as I will be one of the first to purchase. Goodbye Lexus.

    1. Hi there Bill,
