9 ways Comic Relief has helped to benefit UK lives

Toyota GB is an official partner to Red Nose Day 2015, a biennially extravaganza of comedy and fundraising organized in aid of Comic Relief.

We take a look at what Comic Relief has done for our country in the time since its formation in 1985 to help show you why its work, and our sponsorship, is so vitally important.

1. 40% of the money raised during Red Nose Day is spent in the UK

2. In 2003, Comic Relief helped to establish the National Domestic Violence Helpline using funds raised during Red Nose Day.

In the time since, the helpline has received more than 1.5 million calls and refers on average 28 women to a refuge every day.

3. Since 1998, Comic Relief has helped 120,000 young people at risk of, or who have experienced, sexual exploitation or trafficking.

4. There are currently 1,727 Comic Relief funded projects live across the UK.

5. UK residents are never more than 30 miles away from a Comic Relief funded project.

6. Working alongside the Department of Health, Comic Relief funded the first ever elder abuse prevalence study in 2007.

Based upon a sample size of more than 1,200 people aged 66 and over, the study found that 2.6% of those surveyed had experienced mistreatment involving a family member, close friend or care worker during the past year. This equates to about 227,000 people aged 66 and over in the UK.

7. Charities and community support networks can apply for grants from Comic Relief in one of five areas; Better Lives, Healthier Finances, Safer Lives, Stronger Communities and Fairer Society.

Each one differs slightly in its purpose, but all aim to empower individuals and communities to make positive changes to those who require help with living happily and safely in our nation.

8. Between 2009 and 2013, Comic Relief allocated £110m to over 5,000 projects in each nation and across all regions of the UK.

9. Since its inception, Comic Relief has spent £4.5m on over 60 projects that have been set up to help some of the estimated 800,000 people suffering from dementia in the UK.
