New 2.4-litre D-4D engine

The introduction of the 2.4-litre D-4D Global Diesel (GD) engine gives both much improved torque delivery at low and medium engine speeds and class-leading fuel economy. The 2,393cc, 16-valve, DOHC four-cylinder engine generates 148bhp at 3,400rpm, and maximum torque of 400Nm between 1,600 and 2,000rpm. Its strong, responsive and efficient performance is supported by a variable nozzle turbocharger with intercooler.

The new 2.4 GD unit is set to achieve an improvement in fuel efficiency, with combined cycle consumption from 39.8mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are from 187 g/km (figures provisional prior to homologation).

2016 Toyota Hilux
All UK versions of Hilux feature all-wheel drive models and six-speed manual transmission. Invincible and Invincible X models offer the option of a six-speed automatic gearbox. Both transmissions have been extensively revised to improve durability and low-speed driving performance, with quieter, smoother gear changes.

Both manual and automatic Hilux have a top speed of 106mph; acceleration from nought to 62mph is 12.8 seconds for the auto and 13.2 seconds for the manual.

Driving dynamics and off-road ability

Hilux has a new ladder-frame chassis that gives the vehicle a 20 per cent increase in torsional rigidity compared to the current model. It is designed to deliver improved handling, ride comfort, noise and vibration performance and collision safety with outstanding durability in even the most extreme driving environments.

The robust leaf spring and twin shock absorber rear suspension system has been extensively revised to provide off-road articulation capabilities and SUV-like ride comfort and handling stability.

Hilux is equipped with a switchable all-wheel drive system featuring a high and low-ratio transfer case, and both front and rear locking limited-slip differentials. The improved low and medium speed torque delivery of the new diesel engine and the increased strength of the new ladder-frame chassis together enable an increase in towing capacity to 3.5 tonnes (for the UK market)*.

Higher levels of active and passive safety

New Hilux marks the introduction of Toyota Safety Sense to the range, providing a series of safety and driver assistance features. These include a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist.

2016 Toyota Hilux

Toyota Safety Sense is available on all grades: it is fitted as standard on Invincible and Invincible X models and can be specified as an option on Active and Icon.

Exterior design

New Hilux is 75mm longer (at 5,355mm), 20mm wider (1,855mm) and 45mm lower (1,815) than the current generation model.

The combination of toughness and refinement is expressed in a sleek new frontal design which features a unified arrangement of the upper grille and headlamps and a deep, powerful bumper housing a large lower grille. The bonnet wraps over the front wheel arches to reinforce the vehicle’s solid, road presence while the line of the second horizontal bar in the upper grille extends into the headlamp units to form a distinctive daytime running light arrangement, featuring 12 white LEDs.

The headlamp clusters themselves bear the Hilux signature in the side of the casing and wrap around the front wings to further emphasise the pick-up’s width. The headlights on Invincible and Invincible X models adopt powerful LED low-beam projectors.

The fog lamp housings are located at the outer extremities of the front bumper, reinforcing Hilux’s solid and stable stance. The lower corners and bottom of the bumper have been shaped to ensure good ground clearance when driving off road. To the side, there is a seamless transition from the bumper unit into the muscular front wheel arches, creating a more refined appearance.

A thick lower door cross-section neatly links the front and rear wheel arches, the latter now seamlessly integrated with the body, curving upwards to anchor the wrap-around rear lamp clusters. New style flourishes include a blacked-out centre pillar that compliments the smooth, rear-slanted cabin silhouette of Extra Cab and Double Cab models, along with a choice of new 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels. On Double Cab models, the linking of the cab and rear deck with a chrome beltline further unifies the overall design.

The cab roof has been shaped to improve both its styling and practicality. It features an aerodynamic ‘V’ shape that helps channel airflow over the roof and away from the sides of the vehicle. The antenna has been repositioned further forward to keep it clear of bulky loads or deck attachments.

At the rear there are new lamp clusters which incorporate aero stabilising fins – small but effective elements that contribute to the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency. These flank a new steel bumper which is set lower to the ground, allowing for a deeper step to be fitted, improving access to the deck when the tailgate is closed. The rear view camera has been integrated into the handle assembly for cleaner looks and better visibility.

The cargo deck has been made larger, stronger and more practical; maximum deck width has increased from 1,544mm to a class-leading 1,645mm. The tailgate is fitted with stronger, link-type hinges, with support from heavy-duty steel plate brackets when in the open position.

The deck itself has been strengthened to reduce deformation and damage when loading or unloading cargo. The floor ribs have been redesigned and sill cross-members have been added to the floor panel. The header panel has been reinforced, and the shape of the wheel-house rib reinforcement and the service hole cover on the tailgate have been optimised.

The exterior paint colour choices for new Hilux includes new White Pearl, Nebula Blue, Crimson Spark and Avantgarde Bronze shades.

Interior design

New Hilux’s interior provides the durability and functionality required of a working vehicle together with SUV-like refinement, and equipment.

The horizontal emphasis of the clean, uncluttered dashboard design incorporates new, cross fin-type air vents with rotary dial adjustment. The centre console is dominated (Icon grade and higher) by the Toyota Touch 2 integrated, seven-inch multimedia touchscreen, located closer to the front seats for easier use.

Hilux at CVS 08

The new driver’s instrument binnacle features large, analogue speedometer and tachometer dials either side of a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display (Icon grade and higher, with colour graphics on Invincible and Invincible X models). The display is designed so that the most important information appears at the top, closest to the driver’s line of sight. The display menu can be accessed using a control on the steering wheel.

The wheel itself is adjustable for reach and rake (electric adjustment on Invincible and Invincible X) and incorporates thumb rests. Its thicker rim makes for a more comfortable grip; on Icon grade models and higher, it is leather-trimmed.

Hilux at CVS 09

Switches on the steering wheel provide quick and easy control of the six-speaker audio and multi-information display, as well as co-ordination of the touchscreen and multi-information displays. In keeping with the more leisure-oriented interior design, the gear lever has been shortened to give a slicker, more passenger car-like action. Drive mode selection, including all-wheel drive, is now via easy-to-use switches adjacent to the gear lever.

The premium appearance of the cabin is reinforced by metallic-effect details on the dashboard, door trim, instrument binnacle, steering wheel and gear lever bezel. A consistent blue tone has been introduced for the instrument backlighting.

2016 Toyota Hilux price, range and equipment specifications

The new Hilux is available in the UK in three body styles: Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab.

In keeping with their working vehicle profile, The Single and Extra Cab versions are offered only in the entry-level Active specification. Double Cab models are available in all grades.

New equipment features provided on the Active grade include auxiliary switches on the steering wheel, Bluetooth, a cooled front storage box, driver and front passenger airbags (with optional driver knee and curtain shield airbags), Hill-start Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control, Isofix child seat anchors (Double Cab model), follow-me-home headlight function and turn indicators integrated in the electrically adjustable, heated door mirrors.

Icon models further gain the 4.2-inch multi-information display, cruise control DAB digital radio reception and retracting door mirrors. These are in addition to established features including 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, headlamp cleaners, side steps, chrome front grille, rear privacy glass, leather steering wheel, handbrake and gearshift trim and the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system.

The Hilux Invincible is newly equipped with a colour multi-information display, Smart Entry and Start, LED headlights, automatic headlamp levelling, electric steering wheel adjustment, Vehicle Stability Control and a locking differential. As with the current Hilux Invincible, it comes as standard with 18-inch alloys, automatic air conditioning, dusk-sensing headlights and chrome side bars with steps.

The new Hilux Invincible X moves on from the option-based specification of the current model to offer customers an impressive combination of style, comfort and convenience features. The model rides on new 18-inch wheels with a design exclusive to the grade. A chrome pack provides fog lamp and headlight surrounds, bumper trims, scuff plates and rear light cluster trims. An unmissable Hilux decal extends across the width of the tailgate. In the cabin there is leather upholstery and the front seats are heated. The multimedia system is upgraded to Toyota Touch 2 with Go, adding satellite navigation and on-board connectivity functions. For easier manoeuvring in tight spaces, front and rear parking sensors are fitted.

New Hilux is available to order now with first customer deliveries from July.

  2. When is there going to be a option to up grade the active grade radio to DAB and sat nav Its a important option for a working vehicle…

    1. Hi there,
Unfortunately there are no current plans for DAB or navigation to be installed on an Active grade Hilux. These are however available on higher grades such as “Icon, Invincible or Invincible X”. Hope this helps!

  3. Hi there,
We are unable to say what comes next with the 2016 Hilux. We would recommend you keep an eye on our blog or other social media channels to see the most recent updates. Many thanks!

So far so good , cab is comfy Gear box is a good improvement over the old model , the ride is very choppy, hopefully will improve with use , sadly no option for sat nav or DAB radio, and please remember, these new models are slightly heavier than the old model so now classed as light commercial. Not dual purpose !!!so van speed limits apply 50 on A roads 60 dual carriageway and 70 motorway…

  6. I think Toyota are making a big mistake not using the 2.8litre from launch.
Competition are going to benefit from this with so much on offer now from the rivals.
I was thinking of going back to the Hilux after a time away from them but
it would need to be the bigger engine.
    Disappointing!!

      1. I’ve never read this blog before, but cannot see the point. I too would like to know if and when the 2.8 is coming to the UK, but Toyota’s response is they don’t know what is going on (or will not say) and so just wait and see! Toyota have made a big mistake and I’m sure reading this blog that I’m not the only loyal Hilux customer Toyota will be losing to another brand, and we may never come back if we like what we find elsewhere. Come on Toyota, wake up and smell the coffee (or at least read the blog)

      2. Hi Steve. Simply put, there are no plans to bring any other Hilux engine to the UK market. The current model offers a competitive package compared to its rivals, while also falling within European emission regulations. We strongly recommend giving it a test drive before writing it off.

    1. I was reading a test on the new Hilux and they said it came in 2 engine sizes 2.4 and 2.9.now being used to a 3 ltr tug in Hilux and discovery 4,i might have to look else where for grunt. Sorry Toyota.

  7. Where are the new hiluxs manufactured? Also the salesmen never told me anything about adblue. Can you please advise on what it is , how often its needed and what happens if you don’t use it?

    1. Hi Mike. The new Hilux is manufactured in South Africa. We’re sorry to hear the dealer didn’t take you through AdBlue, but handily We have a guide to AdBlue here: po.st/3yQX2x. We hope this helps, and let us know if you have any more questions.
